[Signed] [First Edition] Manuscript Diary of Sgt. James B. Hudson, 7th Regiment U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry, April 1865-April 1866 Hudson, James
1835.18 CAD
Twelvemo, [212pp]. Leather pocket diary. Covers rubbed and worn, half of rear flap missing. Page block detached from spine, but still held to covers by one binding cord. Some signatures loose, but page block is stable. Most of the interior rear pocket is detached from back cover, but still holding along bottom edge. Faint foxing to pages and some light soiling. Contents written in ink of various shades, but handwriting is legible. Hudson's name is written on the front and rear pages. Contains diary entries from April 12, 1865 to April 11, 1866; two lists with names of officers and privates in Company I (one dated October 1st, 1865); list of deserters; list of men furloughed; record of finances; miscellaneous notes, including some poetry which appears to be written by Hudson. Two leaves torn from page block, but all daily diary entries are present. Laid-in contemporary photograph of Sgt. Hudson in uniform, measures 3.25" x 2.5", worn along the edges with some stains on image, appears to be a carte-de-visite which was trimmed and later mounted on a cardboard advertisement, Hudson's name written in ink along bottom edge of border. While not a battlefield narrative, this diary does provide an interesting glimpse into the daily life of an infantry sergeant in the year following the close of the Civil War. James B. Hudson (1832-1918) of Providence, Rhode Island was a stone mason. During the Civil War, he enlisted for three years with the Third Rhode Island Heavy Artillery, entering as a private and promoted to sergeant by the time he mustered out in 1864. In April 1865, Hudson reenlisted with the Seventh Regiment U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry. This diary is from the year he spent with the Seventh. Following his military service, Hudson returned to Providence, where he resumed working as a mason and became an active member of Prescott Post No. 1, GAR. James B. Hudson died at the age of 85 on September 9, 1918. Sgt. Hudson's sword and other items are located in the East Providence Historical Society in Rhode Island. The entries in Sgt. Hudson's diary begin with his reenlistment in Providence, Rhode Island on April 12, 1865. From Providence, he went to Washington DC for a few months and then to Philadelphia where he was stationed at Camp Cadwallader and then Camp Crossman. Diary entries vary in length from one or two lines to a half-page or more. Mentioned in the diary are military activities such as drill, inspection, dress parade and military school. Hudson also indicates what he eats for dinner or when he washes his clothes. As sergeant of the guard, Hudson gives particulars on who's locked in the guard house, and he occasionally describes specific punishments given to some of the men. In addition to military activities, Hudson also mentions what he does for entertainment in Philadelphia, like going to the Chestnut Street Theater to see a play, ice skating on the Schuylkill River or visiting Fairmount Park to see the Water Works. Storey was a staunch advocate for civil liberties and racial equality, working tirelessly to challenge segregation and disenfranchisement laws. He argued several significant cases before the Supreme Court, including Buchanan v. Warley in 1917, which struck down racial zoning laws. Additionally, Storey was a vocal opponent of American imperialism, criticizing U.S. policies in the Philippines following the Spanish-American War.

Also, with a note and envelope tipped onto the rear pastedown endpaper. End leaves are foxed, but not bulk of text, else VG condition. The book is a biography and historical account detailing the life and military career of Major General William Farrar Smith, known to his troops as "Baldy" Smith. The author, James Harrison Wilson, was a fellow Union Army general and military engineer, which lends a unique, personal, and expert perspective to the narrative. William Farrar Smith was a highly regarded military engineer who rose to the rank of Major General of U.S. Volunteers during the Civil War. His career, however, was marked by both praise for strategic brilliance and controversy, leading to him being relieved of command at one point. The book covers Smith's contributions and challenges within the military hierarchy, including his leadership and strategic vision in significant battles. It offers insight into Civil War military tactics, Union Army leadership, and the political intricacies and interpersonal dynamics of the era.

First Edition (first printing). This copy signed by the author on the title page and dated 1942. 8vo. xv, 363pp. Reddy-brown cloth with a paper spine label (and a spare tipped-in at the rear). The cloth lightly faded at the backstrip, and with a small enclosed split to the head of the upper joint, which just impacts the spine label. Top edge lightly dust soiled, and the free endpapers very lightly toned and spotted. A very good copy in lightly dust soiled price-clipped dust wrapper, with several centimetres of corresponding loss to the head of the front panel-spine panel join, and a little accompanying creasing. The author's second book, the humorous fictional diary of a west end draper, presumably inspired by his own experiences managing the family draper business. The format of the present work is not dissimilar to the author's first book, 'The Private Papers of a Bankrupt Bookseller' (1931). The rear panel of this present dust wrapper includes some reviews of his previous effort, my personal favourite being "Badly presented, poorly edited . the outpourings of a genius". Sir William Young Darling (1885-1962) was the Unionist Member of Parliament in the House of Commons for the Edinburgh South constituency from 1945 to 1957, and also director of the Royal Bank of Scotland over roughly the same period.

First edition, stated, of American journalist and historian William Shirer's chronicle of life in Nazi Germany as foreign correspondent for American news agencies including CBS, based on his daily journal entries, radio reports, and personal observations. Published in 1941 by Alfred A. Knopf. One of the earliest detailed eyewitness accounts of the rise of the Nazi regime written for an American audience. Berlin Diary became a bestseller and helped shape American understanding of the situation in Germany prior to U.S. entry into WWII. Shirer's first published book, it in turn formed the basis for his landmark historical study The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany, published in 1960 and winner of a National Book Award for non-fiction. 8vo (6.5" x 8.5"), hardcover with printed dust jacket, 605 pages plus forward and index. Collegially inscribed on FFE "To Tom Stix/fellow sufferer in the radio business?with best regards. Bill Shirer." Tom Stix was a partner in a talent agency (Stix and Gude, founded in 1942) centered around broadcast journalists including Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite, Howard K. Smith, and John Cameron Swayze. While there is no evidence that Stix ever represented Shirer, the two men would have been well-known to each other, especially as Stix represented Murrow and Shirer's career was jump-started as the first of "Murrow's Boys". A nice association copy of what is regarded as a crucial?if edited?piece of 20th century journalism. Spine shaken; slight bowing to boards. Light rubbing and chipping to dj. Faint damp staining to front cover, with bumping to bottom edge. Creasing down the length of spine. Minor foxing to rear cover.

The First Australian Printing published by Text Publishing, Melbourne in 2007. 8vo., two-tone orange and white publisher's boards, backstrip lettered in grey with publisher's device to foot; together in the matching wrapper; with matching grey endpapers; The BOOK essentially near Fine, with very faint spots to the fore-edge and light rubbing to the lower edges of the boards; The WRAPPER also Fine; an excellent copy. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. The First Australian Edition - The true first printing, published in Australia, the author's 'adopted' country. The Book has been signed (without dedication) to the title page. Coetzee had moved to Australia in 2002 and became a citizen in 2006. This work, published one year after he attained that citizenship, follows a character much like the author himself; an ageing, distinguished writer of South African heritage, a vegetarian, an academic, and a man hugely self-critical of his own accomplishments. Named 'JC', the character even, at one point, refers to "my novel Waiting for the Barbarians", referring to the book of the same name published by Coetzee in 1980. Essentially a book on "the one question that truly engaged his soul: how to live", the plot follows JC as he contributes a series of essays to a work entitled 'Strong Opinions', typed for him by a beautiful young woman, Anya, whom he meets in the laundry room of his apartment block. A fine example. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

Translated by Marcell Benedek. Budapest, 1934. Dante. 470 [2 blank] First Hungarian edition. Publisher's half-cloth binding with illustrated cover. Signed. Cheka: The All-Russian Extraordinary Commission, abbreviated as VChK was the first Soviet secret police organization. It was established on 20 December 1917 by the Council of People's Commissars of the Russian SFSR, and was led by Felix Dzerzhinsky. By the end of the Russian Civil War in 1922, the Cheka had at least 200,000 personnel. Ostensibly created to protect the October Revolution from "class enemies" such as the bourgeoisie and members of the clergy, the Cheka soon became a tool of repression wielded against all political opponents of the Bolshevik regime. Alja Rachmanowa is the pen name of Galina Nikolaevna Dyuragina (1898-1991), also known as Alexandra von Hoyer, a Russian author and child psychologist. She is known for her diaries which describe her childhood, studies and marriage under the Russian revolution, and life as a refugee in Vienna. As most of her work was first published in German, translated by her husband Arnulf von Hoyer from her Russian manuscripts, she chose a German spelling for her pen name. Galina was the oldest daughter of a physician in the town of Kasli near Yekaterinburg. Since her family was part of the aristocracy of Russia prior to the revolution, they suffered much in the years after 1917. Eventually Galina and her Austrian husband Arnulf von Hoyer were forced to flee to western Europe. Her diaries describing life in Russia under communism were translated into many languages. She lived in Austria from 1925 to 1945 but her works were banned under the Nazi regime. She died in the Swiss town of Ettenhausen, where she had lived since 1948. ( O,O ) /)__) , ,
