[Signed] [First Edition] Beyond the Pir Panjal - Life Among the Mountains and Valleys of Kashmir Neve, Ernest F. [Used - Very good] [Hardcover]
164.48 CAD
1912. First edition. 320pp., 1 folding and 1 in-text map, and 58 black and white illustrations. Ernest Frederic Neve (1861-1946) was a British surgeon, Christian medical missionary, and author who provided medical care to the people of Kashmir. He established the Kashmir Mission Hospital and the Kashmir State Leper Hospital with his brother Arthur Neve and made significant contributions to the healthcare facilities in Kashmir. His object in this book has been to combine and to set forth the great variety of interests in Kashmir, and the chief characteristics of the central and outlying valleys with their widely distributed inhabitants. A record has been included of several climbs on the higher peaks and of journeys by upland routes, in order to give an account of the extensive mountain ranges which form so large a part of Kashmir. Chapter on the Mission Hospital describe the efforts made to improve the moral and physical condition of the people. The book is bound in the original grey cloth covered boards with brown titling on the spine and brown titling with a colour illustration on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the boards. The bottom front corner and spine ends are bumped. The contents are tight and clean apart from some scattered but mostly light foxing. The half-title page and last four page of the index are more heavily foxed. The author has flat-signed the title-page and there is an inscription on the front fixed endpaper and a quote in a decorative hand from Browning on the front free endpaper. [Signed] [First Edition] Among the Believers: An Islamic Journey Naipaul, V. S. [Used - Very good] [Hardcover]
1055.18 CAD
A very good first edition of this travelog inscribed by Naipaul to his American editor, Robert Gottlieb. This book reports on Naipaul's travels in Iran, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Indonesia. As a young editor, Gottlieb acquired Joseph Heller's Catch-22 when he was at Simon and Schuster; he spent most of his career at Knopf, perhaps the most prestigious literary publisher in the US, with a five-year stint as the editor of The New Yorker (which shared ownership with Knopf). In his memoir, Avid Reader, Gottlieb wrote about Naipaul, one of several Nobel Prize winners with whom he worked: "When I say 'worked,' I don't mean editorially, since Vidia didn't welcome editorial suggestion, and fortunately didn't need it. We maintained a polite professional relationship?occasional dinners in London or New York which I found strained. I sensed a streak of narcissism in him, and too much (barely) repressed anger. He was also a snob. But what a superb writer!" A terrific association copy?a Nobel Prize-winning author inscribed to his editor, who was himself among the best in the business. This is a first American edition (published in October 1981; the UK edition came out in late September). A very good or better copy in a very good dust jacket with a few edge tears and a small surface scar on the front panel. The book is inscribed, "V S Naipaul?twelve years after. For Bob NYC 11-11-81." The inscription most likely refers to Naipaul switching publishers, from Macmillan to Knopf, beginning with his book The Loss of El Dorado, published in 1969. Provenance: The private library of Robert Gottlieb (1931?2023), sold in part in 2024; supporting paperwork will be provided with the book.

Unusually clean and bright INSCRIBED copy in the original nearly complete dust jacket (not price-clipped) and with only a few small chips lost from the extremities and minor foxing to a few pages. The book was an extension of his doctoral dissertation. Montague Francis Ashley-Montagu (1905 -1999), born Israel Ehrenberg, was a British-American anthropologist who popularized many topics such as race and gender; human evolution and development. He was the rapporteur, in 1950, for the UNESCO statement The Race Question. After relocating to the United States he used the name "Ashley Montagu," and became a naturalized American citizen. He taught at Harvard, Princeton (his principal home), Rutgers, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and New York University. He also often appeared on television where his wit and charm were widely appreciated. Gifted with an extraordinary memory and powers of synthesis, Ashley-Montagu wrote or edited more than sixty books. His works on Race, the Natural Superiority of Women (1953ff.), Man and Aggression (1968), The Elephant Man (1971), the importance of Touching (1978), and neoteny in Growing Young (1981) were pathfinding. [Signed] [First Edition] "Performers after a Respectable Funeral" - an original watercolour by Punch artist, John Leech Leech, John [Used - Very good]
1055.98 CAD
LEECH, John (1817-1864). 'Performers after a Respectable Funeral.' Original watercolour for Punch, c.1850-1853, published in Pictures of Life and Character, Second Series (Bradbury & Evans, 1854). Watercolour and pencil on wove paper, signed lower left, titled in the artist's hand at lower centre. Image 310 × 360 mm (sheet 330 × 510 mm). Unmounted, loosely housed in an archival sleeve; very light marginal toning only, the colours bright and unfaded. Very good. This original watercolour was the design for John Leech's Punch cartoon 'Performers after a Respectable Funeral,' later engraved for Punch, or the London Charivari between 1850 and 1853 and reissued in Pictures of Life and Character, Second Series (1854). The composition shows a group of 'professional mourners' relaxing in a tavern after a funeral. Their sombre top hats, black scarves, and grave expressions the props of their trade are replaced by laughter, drink, and smoke; the innkeeper stands to one side, half-amused, as the men discard the trappings of faux grief and fall into boisterous camaraderie. The published engraving, as reproduced in Pictures of Life and Character, carries the subtitle 'Costume: Mourning,' identifying it as part of Leech's series on the absurdities of fashion and custom. The finished wood-engraved version (executed by the Dalziel Brothers or Swain) tightens the linework and adds cross-hatching, but follows this original composition almost exactly, confirming it as Leech's working drawing for publication. Leech's Punch watercolours of this nature are held in institutional collections but rarely show up in commerce.

171.29 CAD
FURNISS, Harry. (1854-1925). "What it has come to": An autograph letter fragment with original pen-and-ink political caricatures, n.d. Single leaf (approximately 110 × 170 mm), written in ink on headed stationery ('Alington, Dean Park, Bournemouth'). The surviving leaf is the illustrated first page only, the remainder of the letter having been removed by a previous collector; extensive mounting residue to the verso. Small paper-clip mark at the upper left corner. Still, very good. The recto shows an animated pen-and-ink cartoon by Furniss of three figures in confrontation, one gesturing emphatically toward a scuffle between the other two, beneath the caption 'What it has come to?'. The gesturing figure bears a strong resemblance to David Lloyd George. Addressed to Lord Portarlington; unsigned, as its the first-page fragment of a letter. An accomplished example of Furniss's informal sketches that he used to drop into correspondence. Furniss (1854-1925) was one of the leading British illustrators and political cartoonists of his generation, closely associated with Punch.
