Signed and inscribed by the author, Michael Anthony, with black pen on the blank first free front endpaper. "No one is born courageous, but everyone hopes courage will come. Here's how to stand strong. Like many other people of faith, you may be concerned about what the future holds for Christians in America. Every day we wake up in a nation and world that is increasingly hostile to our beliefs and values. Even the basic freedoms that define America - speech and religion - are under attack. The result is that many of us have become fearful, apathetic, and detached. The great need of the day is a sweeping revolution of courage in our lives, families, and houses of worship. A Call For Courage will spark that revolution in you. Michael Anthony understands how fear can paralyze us, and in this revolutionary new book he shows Christians how to stand up and speak out, mobilizing them to walk by faith, not fear. Drawing from Scripture and deep personal experience, he proves that anyone can learn the secret to putting fear in its place and becoming more courageous. A Call for Courage will help you stand up and speak out while others demand you sit down and shut up. You will learn how to: Develop the secret weapons God has given you for courage; Handle haters, racists, and everyone in between; Overcome attacks against your freedom of religion and speech; Speak the truth with love when disagreements threaten to create division; and Develop courageous humility as your new way of life. A Call for Courage is a handbook on how to live with courageous humility. No matter who you are or what you're facing, A Call for Courage will help you live with power, truth, and love in an age of intolerance and fear." - from the inner front jacket flap. "A Call for Courage is the book we have all been waiting for. It's timely, prophetic, and yet very practical. Do you want to live with power, truth, and love in these increasingly difficult times? Then get this book and apply what you'll learn to your life!" - Joel Richardson, New York Times bestselling author, speaker, and filmmaker. "If you're only going to read one book this year, read A Call for Courage." - Keith R. Krell, PhD, DMin, professor of Biblical Exposition, Moody Bible Institute. "This book is a call to personal revival, to confess and forsake any known sin and any doubtful habit. It is also a call to obey God in both the private and public moments of our life." - Dr. Bill Thrasher, professor and program head of Spiritual Formation and Discipleship, Moody Theological Seminary. Unidentified aristocratic armorial book plate.A well-read but G-VG copy of this interesting work which contains much on the occult and very early illustration of sign language. *** Duncan Campbell (c. 1680-1730) was a Scottish deaf man and professed soothsayer. The account of Campbell's early life, brought up in Lapland where his Scottish father had wed a local woman, has been questioned. He had some teaching at the University of Glasgow, according to the recommendations of John Wallis. Campbell went in 1694 to London, where his predictions attracted attention in fashionable society. Running into debt, he went to Rotterdam, where he enlisted as a soldier. Returning in a few years to London, he read a wealthy young widow's fortune, to his own benefit, and having taken a house in Monmouth Street, he found himself again a centre of attraction. Campbell succeeded in obtaining the notice of royalty, as reporting in the 'Daily Post' of Wednesday, 4 May 1720: 'Last Monday Mr. Campbell, the deaf and dumb gentleman?introduced by Colonel Carr?kissed the king's hand, and presented to his majesty "The History of his Life and Adventures", which was by his majesty most graciously received.' In 1726 Campbell appeared as a vendor of miraculous medicines. He published 'The Friendly Demon; It consists of two letters, the first by Duncan Campbell, giving an account of an illness which attacked him in 1717, and continued nearly eight years, until his good genius appeared and revealed that he could be cured by the use of the lodestone; the second on genii or familiar spirits, with an account of a marvellous sympathetic powder which had been brought from the East. A postscript informed the readers that at 'Dr. Campbell's house, in Buckingham Court, over against Old Man's Coffee House, at Charing Cross, they may be readily furnished with his "Pulvis Miraculosus", and finest sort of Egyptian loadstones.' Campbell died after a severe illness in 1730.

[Signed] [First Edition] Top of the Bill. The Story of the London Palladium. Signed by Laurel and Hardy, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby et al Bevan, Ian [Signed] [First Edition] Top of the Bill. The Story of the London Palladium. Signed by Laurel and Hardy, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby et al Bevan, Ian 4138.23 CAD A remarkable copy of this history of the UK's most famous variety theatre. Likely one of several purchased by the Palladium at the time of publication and rebound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with several blank signing sheets at each end of the book. Presumably intended as keepsakes, gifts or presentation copies for staff and distinguished visitors. This particular copy has been presented to a former Stage Door Keeper upon his retirement in 1974 and at the first blank leaf is inscribed to him by name by two of his colleagues. The second of these reads, "Dear George - Here follows a few memories - long may you enjoy them!". Four of the following few leaves are either wholly or partially signed by a variety of international performers and personalities associated directly with the theatre. Principle amongst the latter is the autograph of impresario and Palladium managing director, VAL PARNELL. It was Parnell's television show, "Val Parnell's Sunday Night at the London Palladium" which launched the Beatles to national stardom following their appearance on the show. Amongst the British performers to have signed the book can be counted Palladium stalwarts PAT KIRKWOOD, GRACIE FIELDS, and EDDIE KNOX & CHARLES NAUGHTON from "The Crazy Gang". Actors and Comedians TERRY THOMAS, ALFRED MARKS, MICHAEL BENTINE (The Goon Show founding member) and JERRY DESMONDE are present while the world of music is represented by band leader and impresario JACK HYLTON and Welsh singer DONALD PEERS. Danish actor/singer CARL BRISSON features as does the performer known as "the father of modern ventriloquism", FRED RUSSELL - also the father of Val Parnell as it happens. From across the Atlantic, STAN LAUREL and OLIVER HARDY have added their signatures as have BOB HOPE and BING CROSBY. These last two are rarely seen together - to have all four autographs in the same book is next to miraculous. BETTY HUTTON has signed the book as has influential singer/songwriter, JOHNNIE RAY. From further afield, the internationally renowned mentalist double-act, THE PIDDINGTONS, have added their signatures to the book. To this day, Sydney and Lesley Piddington are considered to be one of the greatest two-person telepathy acts of all time and were an absolute sensation - particularly in the UK - in their day. The book itself has been signed by the author at the title page. Bound in 3/4 green morocco gilt with raised bands at the spine, top edge gilt, pp. 254, illustrated with black and white photographs. Sunned at the backstrip and split at the joints at both the lower and upper compartments. Minor stains to the marbling at both covers. Some scarring to the top-edge gilt. Corners rubbed a little with small loss of leather. The text-block has tanned with age and there are occasional spots in some margins. It is likely that the book has not been particularly well stored over the entirety of the intervening years, with some traces of damp-staining noticeable at the bottom edge - not affecting the text...
