[Signed] [First Edition] A & The or William T.C. Baumgarten Comes to Town Raskin, Ellen [Hardcover] [Signed] [First Edition] A & The or William T.C. Baumgarten Comes to Town Raskin, Ellen [Hardcover] 635.18 CAD First edition of Ellen Raskin's linguistically experimental (and pedagogically ambitious) picture book, inscribed with a drawing. Dedicating the book to "everyone who can read a and the," Raskin sets those indefinite and definite articles in bold throughout the text as visual cues to keep young readers engaged. The wordplay reflects the puzzle at the center of the plot, as a group of children try to decipher the cryptic initials of William T. C. Baumgarten, the new kid on their block. During a classroom lesson on the Bayeux Tapestry, the children come to recognize and appreciate William (The Conqueror's) uniqueness. Best remembered for her Newbery-winning novel The Westing Game, Raskin first made her mark as a graphic designer; she created the iconic first edition dust jacket for Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time. The recipient of this copy, Susan Mandel Glazer, was an internationally recognized literacy advocate and Raskin's close friend, reflected here in the original drawing of William T.C. Baumgarten voicing "love." A compelling association copy. Single volume, measuring 9.25 x 7.25 inches: [32]. Original orange pictorial cloth stamped and lettered in blue; original unclipped color pictorial dust jacket. Color illustrations throughout text. Inscribed and signed by Raskin with ink drawing to front free endpaper. Foot of spine bumped, light toning and edgewear to jacket.

"They Are the Epitome of Capitalist Ambition. Or Arrogance. Or Both. They were not content to do something as mundane as build a successful business. Rather, they were hell-bent on global domination. Along the way, they were afforded the stature of world leaders, idolized like rock stars, and treated like folk heroes. When the history of the Digital Age is written, the story will be boiled down to the empires created by five men: Bill Gates, Steve Case, Larry Ellison, John Chambers, and Jeff Bezos. They are The New Imperialists. Yet, who really are they? Beyond the scores of cover stories, newspaper headlines, television interviews and biographies, their personal motives and motivators have remained a mystery. Until now. Mark Leibovich spent 18 months interviewing the men themselves and over 400 people who have known them best: family, friends, neighbors, former teachers, classmates, and lovers, colleagues, employees and adversaries. Combining the information he gleaned with his own unique take on these men, Leibovich has written a fascinating collection of biographies emphasizing their little known and deeply personal quirks, motivations, warts, demons, and vanities. Gates talks about his boyhood best friend, whose death in a fluke accident at age 15 has haunted him - and perhaps driven him - ever since. Ellison reflects on his father's recurring scorn that he just wasn't good enough to ever succeed. Bezos talks about never knowing his natural father. Chambers reveals how a childhood learning disability hampered his early schooling. Case addresses the tensions that marred his relationship with his AOL co-founder, Jim Kimsey. What are the common denominators that drove them to invent, conquer and rule their own economic realm? With compelling style, Leibovich reveals their life stories as never before told." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps

"This is a must-read for every CEO of every company, big or small, who understands that a profitable company and a sustainable environment are mutually dependent." - Tom Vilsack, former governor of Iowa. "Gary Hirshberg is the CE-Yo of Stonyfield Farm Yogurt. In Stirring It Up, Hirshberg describes how he built a successful $300 million-per-year business by incorporating environmental principles and practices, and how other companies can accomplish this, too. Making a business green actually saves companies money in the long run - for instance, by measuring and reducing one's climate footprint, cutting down on trash and packaging, converting waste to energy, and building loyal and sustainable supplier relations, all while boosting consumer loyalty and thus reducing advertising costs. Hirshberg illustrates his points with practical informtion and advice, as well as engaging anecdotes from the early days of his yougurt company: how a power outage left them milking cows by hand, and how a fire in a dumpster revealed the need for better packaging. He also describes numerous hands-on grassroots marketing strategies, such as using the yougurt lids for messages about the environment and giving out samples to thank subway commuters for using public transit, and explains how these approaches make a much more powerful impact on consumers than traditional advertising. Included are many examples of other businesses that have saved money by reducing their environmental footprints - companies such as Timberland, Patagonia, Whole Foods, Newman's Own, Clif Bar, and even Wal-Mart - all of whom have found that being green can be both cost-effective and financially rewarding. An inspiring bok for business owners and managers, as well as anyone interested in saving the environment. Stirring It Up demonstrates how companies can work to save the planet, while achieving greater profits and satisfaction, and how we can all use the power of conscious consumption to encourage green corporate behavior." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Donald Trump Jr. is the most dynamic, controversial, and popular voice on the right since, well .his father. Having honed his political chops on the trail doing hundreds of campaign rallies and events, Don Jr. owns the uncanny ability to see the truth behind the smoke machine of lies that clouds our politics today. Like his father, he's the classic counterpuncher. In Triggered, he takes that combative edge, razor wit, and laser focus to the page, and no subject is safe. From Robert Mueller and his phony investigation to college safe spaces, from social justice warriors to the hand-to-hand combat of social media, from Jussie Smollett to Joe Biden, Pocahontas, and the rest of the wild socialist 2020 Dem hopefuls, Don Jr. tears into nearly every topic that crowds our news cycles and social media feeds today. Along the way you'll get a glimpse of a life of stark contrasts. Don spent his childhood summers in rural Communist Czechoslovakia with his grandparents. The rest of the year, he lived in a triplex atop Trump Tower or at sumptuous Mar-a-Lago. As a teenager, he drove earth movers for his dad, then bartended in Aspen after college. By twenty-five, however, he was a VP for the Trump Organization and beginning to build an impressive business resume. From the boardrooms of the Trump Tower, he was thrust into politics and on an unlikely path to become the primary surrogate, the "tip of the spear," on the greatest presidential campaign in American history. Written with wit and refreshing candor, Triggered is a book for our political time - and Donald Trump Jr. is the voice of our political future." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Donald Trump Jr. is the eldest son of President Donald J. Trump. Originally published in 1907 by Paul Elder and followed by this revised edition in 1917 by Dodd, Mead. Signed and dated "Jan. 1933" on the front free endpaper. Uncommon signed. Wonderful and whimsical, this book humorously distinguishes between look-alike plant and animals via woodcut illustration and verse. Apparently Robert Williams Wood was inspired to produce this satire by the "nature fakers"controversy, epitomized by John Burroughs criticizing William Long for being overly anthropomorphic and dishonest in his reporting about wild animals. The introduction reads: "By other Nature books I'm sure, / You've often been misled, / You've tired a wall-flower to secure. / And "picked a hen" instead . . ." Some of the comparisons that follow include, quite ingeniously, "The Plover, The Clover" and "The Parrot, the Carrot" and so on (plant-to-plant and animal-to-animal comparisons are later introduced). Born in Concord, MA, Robert Williams Wood was a physicist and inventor who distinguished himself in the field of optics--his work is important to our modern understanding of ultraviolet light--but clearly he also could rhyme with the best of them. A very good copy in brown paper boards with green cloth spine. Slight wear through paper at corners and fraying to spine ends. Lacking a dust jacket. A charming and historical book.

So how in hell do people make ten times more than you make? How do people make a hundred or a thousand times what you make if they can't have a hundred or a thousand times our IQ? How? I'LL tell you how! Because they dream bigger than you. Their expectations are higher than yours. That's how, I'm often asked, if I had my life to live over again what would I change. I'd only change one thing. I'd set my goals higher. That's right. With all my mega-success, I'd still set my goals higher." - Dan Peña. Octavo. 206pp. Ownership stamp and signature of noted American psychologist Henry Guze (a co-founder, with Ellis, of both of the American Academy of Psychotherapists and the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex) on the front pastedown and front fly, else fine in a near fine dustwrapper with light wear, faintest sunning on spine, and a couple of tiny nicks and tears. Warmly lnscribed to Guze and his wife on the front fly, dated 11/15/57: "For both Henry + VivianAt work or at homeAnd let the chips fall where they may! With most affectionate regards, Al." A lovely association, with an important New Year's greeting from Ellis and his new wife laid in (see below). According to the Albert Ellis Institute, *How to Live with a Neurotic* was Ellis' first book utilizing his groundbreaking psychological technique, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). It was published five years before his magnum opus, *Reason and Emotion in Psychotherapy*. Even signed copies of Ellis's work seem to be very uncommon; this Inscribed copy is made even more impressive by a four-page New Year's greeting from Ellis and his new wife Rhoda Winter laid in, which announces the recent creation of REBT. Ellis was known for being quite cheeky, and the newsletter is a delight to read. After his introduction, he goes on to highlight some of the interesting things his new wife has been doing since their marriage. (Rhoda Winter, later Rhoda Winter Russell, was a dancer and pioneering movement therapist; they would divorce two years later.) Ellis then catches the reader up on his exploits: writing and publishing (mentioning this book), and helping organize two professional groups (the American Academy of Psychotherapists and the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex, both of which Guze, to whom the book is inscribed, helped found). His final point is made modestly: "developed a new technique of rational psychotherapy which has aroused violent enthusiasm, 99 44/100 per cent negative, among zillions of other therapists." He goes on to wish their friends, relatives, enemies, and countrymen a "GODDAM / ENJOYABLE AND RATIONAL / NEW YEAR." In the introduction to a 2001 interview with Ellis in *Psychology Today*, Robert Epstein writes, "Given these techniques [REBT] have now become mainstream, it's safe to say that no individualnot even Freud himselfhas had a greater impact on modern psychotherapy." An important title with an excellent association, accompanied by a rare piece of ephemera rather nonchalantly announcing a major breakthrough in modern psychiatry.
