MOORE, Marianne. Collected Poems. New York: MacMillan 1951. Inscribed on the ffep by the author thus: "Anne J. Mills copy/ of these Collected Poems/ Marianne Moore/ January 1952". With the publication date also added by the author "December 17th" on the copyright page (see note below). The author has also made an addition to one of her most famous poems The Jerboa on page twenty by inserting the word "out" to the last line on the page making it now reads "Undulated out by speed, straight". First American edition printed in USA and bound in Blue boards, following withdrawn American issue with orange boards printed by Faber in UK of Moore's Pulitzer Prize-winning collection. Fine copy in like dustjacket which is very slightly faded on the spine and has three small nicks all less than 1/2cm long. Dealer Notes The first edition of Marianne Moore's Collected Poems was printed and bound by Faber & Faber for both the English and American markets. Of a total first printing of 5000 copies, 3500 were for UK and 1500 for USA. The American issue was printed with an integral title-page for Macmillan, and exported to the United States to be issued there first as Moore was an American and to protect copyright. When the books arrived in America customs released part of the shipment with the standard stipulation that they could not be released until customs clearance was given. Macmillan and Marianne Moore innocently sent out some copies, Moore inscribed to a number of friends and MacMillan to reviewers, it is believed the number of copies sent out to have been between forty and sixty, before word came back from customs that the books were not admissible because they lacked a printed copyright notice on the verso of the title page. If they had been released Moore would have lost her copyright so they were shipped back to England. Marianne Moore s bibliography Craig S. Abbott writes: "In a strict sense, these copies were never issued. The official publication date of the British edition was September 14, 1951; the first edition of the Collected Poems to be printed in America of which this is one was December 17, 1951. Moore's Collected Poems swept all of the major literary awards for poetry: the Bollingen Prize, the National Book Award, and the Pulitzer Prize.

[Signed] [First Edition] POEMS [including "A Visit from St. Nicholas"] Moore, Clement [Used - Very good] [Hardcover]
8535.18 CAD
Inscribed first edition of this collection of Moore's verse, the first with "The Night Before Christmas," then still known by its original title, "A Visit from St. Nicholas." With this poem, Clement Moore created the modern Santa Claus. Christian legends and European folktales of St. Nicholas had existed before, but Moore's imagery - helped along in the 1860s by Thomas Nast's iconic illustrations - gave us the Santa Claus that children recognize today: jolly and plump, wearing a red suit with white fur trim. First published in 1823 in the TROY SENTINEL in New York, the poem became a popular inclusion in newspapers throughout the 1820s. However, these publications were anonymous; it was not until the poem's publication in 1837 anthology (THE NEW-YORK BOOK OF POETRY) that it was attributed to Clement Moore. Clement himself did not claim it directly in print until this 1844 collection: "his first public acknowledgment of authorship" of the poem (Marshall, 10). A major edition of a cultural touchtone, scarce inscribed. 12mo, 7'' x 4.5''. Contemporary half navy calf, blue cloth boards, expertly rebacked with original spine laid down, raised bands, gilt stamped spine. Endpapers renewed. xii, [13]-216 pages. Inscribed by Moore in ink to half title: "To Mrs. James L. Moore, / with the respects / of the author." Cracking to gutter at half title (still firm), with some foxing to early and final leaves. Interior largely clean. Housed in custom full red goatskin clamshell box.
