Ann Allen Shockley (1927-) is an author and former academic librarian, professor of library science and activist archivist, who specialised in African-American collections. She founded the Black Oral History Program at Fisk University, where she was the Head of Special Collections. Maya Angelou, Gwendolyn Brooks and Toni Morrison feature here, alongside Shockley herself (with this title) and referencing a title in preparation, "A Love So Bold," which likely became Loving Her (1974), Shockley's (also) pioneering first novel, which featured a black lesbian protagonist.

He also assembled an exceptional collection of ancient Roman, Anglo-Saxon, and British coins. In the original green decorative cloth binding with gilt peacock design to front board and gilt designs to spine. Aeg. With numerous black and white illustrations by Irish artist, Hugh Thomson, who took great care to ensure that every piece of furniture, clothing or background was accurate for the period. The binding has been expertly rebacked relaying the original spine so the binding is sound and tight. The gilt on the front board and spine is slightly dulled - more so on the spine which is very slightly cocked to the front. The corners and spine ends have been rebuilt. The cloth is very clean. Internally there is professional repair to the endpaper joints with a slight scuff on the front pastedown endpaper and old ownership details from 1897 on the verso of the front free endpaper. The contents are complete (pp xxvii; 476). and very clean with new tissue guard to the frontispiece. There are a couple of fox spots on the frontispiece and the title page which also has a small toned area at the top. There is persisent light toning and light spotting in the bottom margin and the occasional spot or mark elsewhere, eg some small spots in the text at the bottom of p 193-6, spotting in the gutter of pp 205-213. There is an old crease at the bottom corner of the rear free endpaper. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.
