Count Felix von Luckner (18811966) was a German naval officer famed for his World War I commerce-raiding exploits aboard the Seeadler, a wind-powered auxiliary cruiser he commanded with an unusual emphasis on minimizing loss of life; over an 11-month cruise in 191617, he captured or sank more than a dozen Allied ships while taking hundreds of prisoners without a single combat fatality. Nicknamed the "Sea Devil," he cultivated a public image of chivalry at sea, and his postwar career mixed lectures, memoir writing (The Sea Devil's Fo'c'sle, The Sea Devil), and occasional controversy tied to his status as a nationalist symbol during the Weimar and early Nazi periods, though he later distanced himself from the regime. His dramatic escape attempts after the Seeadler was wrecked on Mopelia Islandculminating in a brief recapture after seizing a small boatadded to his legend.

Hardback in dustwrapper. 24 × 15.5cm, 250pp. In 1916, a three-masted windjammer bearing Norwegian colours sailed out of a quiet anchorage in Germany, loaded with cargo and apparently bound for Australia. Her true mission was quite different. The ship was, in fact, the SMS Seeadler, commanded by swashbuckling German aristocrat Felix von Luckner. Over an epic voyage, he used cunning and deception to destroy fourteen merchant ships, all the while evading the utterly foxed and infuriated British Admiralty in a daring game of cat and mouse. This rip-roaring World War I story depicts a life of espionage, counterespionage and piracy of the most gentlemanly kind. Condition: The book itself is in very good condition. The dustwrapper has some light bumping to the spine and a little creasing along the top edge.

On October 29, 1917, they were aboard the RMS Leinster, a passenger ship sailing from Kingstown (now Dún Laoghaire) in Ireland to Holyhead, Wales. During World War I, the Irish Sea was a heavily contested area, and the Leinster was attacked by a German submarine, UB-123, with a torpedo. The ship was struck and quickly sank. The sinking of the RMS Leinster was a devastating maritime disaster that resulted in the loss of over 500 lives, including Alice and Claude Askew. Their deaths marked a tragic end to the lives of this prolific British writing couple, who had made significant contributions to literature during their time. The sinking of the RMS Leinster remains one of the lesser-known but poignant tragedies of World War I.

[Signed] [First Edition] The Devil to Pay : American Soldier of Fortune in Castro's Revolution (inscribed first printing) Moore, Robin [Signed] [First Edition] The Devil to Pay : American Soldier of Fortune in Castro's Revolution (inscribed first printing) Moore, Robin 1030.18 CAD Coward McCann, New York. 1961. 320 pages. First edition, first printing. Book is about fine with slight toning along panel edges. $4.50 price intact on DJ flap with 5 open chips. This is a signed association copy, by author Robin Moore. Moore, ever the flamboyant author who was the son of the man who founded the Sheraton Hotel chain, was Harvard-educated, and where he became close pals with Robert F. Kennedy. He then went on to pen the best sellers the Green Berets and The French Connection, among others, the latter of which translated incredibly well to the silver screen. Moore's inscription on the front endpaper reads: For ___, As we sit (so often and in a bittersweet mood we seem to do this) at Idlewild waiting for a plane to take me away. Love, Robin. Idlewild, March 30, 1961. All things point to this being an intimate association copy as the dated inscription coincides with the publishing of this new title. Mr. Moore's inscription reads as though the two of them are waiting together at the airport for him to leave, again, from the airport that would be renamed JFK, in NYC, in tribute to Moore's close pal's brother's assassination. Ironically, this very story tells the story of a hired American mercenary tangled-up in Castro's revolution; and this book's inscription is dated only 17 days before Moore's Harvard pals would order the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. It makes you wonder where Mr. Moore was headed to, after penning this inscription at the airport, for a book chronicling the firsthand secret exploits of an American soldier of fortune intertwined with the Castro brothers, and who it turns out would be the focus of a failed coup attempt by the author's Harvard pals, just seventeen days later. Hmmm.
