He argued several significant cases before the Supreme Court, including Buchanan v. Warley in 1917, which struck down racial zoning laws. (Krakie her grandmother name; her maiden named was Kracaw, so perhaps slant of that.) With the subtitle "An Essay on the Natural History of the World's Cultures, Living and Extinct," this book represents Kroeber's late attempt to create a tentative taxonomy of culture around the globe. It ended up a posthumous publication--Alfred Kroeber died in 1960--so this copy is about as good as it gets, and it's an uncommon book in general. Alfred Louis Kroeber studied with Franz Boas before making his name at UC Berkeley where he became known as the "Dean of American Anthropologists." Theodora met him as doctoral student there and was herself an accomplished anthropologist, publishing later in life, among other books, The Inland Whale and Ishi in Two Worlds, which tells the story of the last Yahi man who Alfred befriend and studied after he was brought to Berkeley. Ursula LeGuin is their daughter. A slim, tall octavo in black cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Very good with bumping to a few corners and a touch of sunning to spine ends. In a good jacket with wear to spine including a diagonal inch of loss to spine tail.

Although the first pineapple was cultivated in the UK in the late seventeenth or likelier the early eighteenth century, a mania for them continued right through the Georgian period. Pineries, hothouses specifically for pineapples, became a grand statement of wealth and cultivation. The pineapple would come to be the table centerpiece par excellence, and pineapple finials on buildings became common in Britain; the pinnacles of the belltowers of St. Paul's Cathedral are golden pineapples. (Mrs Malaprop makes a very good pineapple-pinnacle swap.) John Abercrombie (1726-1806) established himself as the great Georgian gardening expert; with Thomas Mawe he wrote Every Man His Own Gardener (1767), an exceptionally popular manual. He was employed at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. His fame brought him to the attention of Catherine the Great but he sent a book rather than going himself to oversee her hothouses. The Hot-House Gardener was an invaluable tool for the widespread establishment in England of artificial climates, whether full glass houses or merely walled gardens with elaborate networks of pipes to ripen fruit early and more reliably. The Reverend Richard Grosvenor Bartelot (1868-1947) was long vicar of Fordington St. George, Dorset (after serving at Shrewton and Corfe Castle). There he preached 4,000 sermons. Bartelot served as editor of the Somerset & Dorset Notes & Queries, and was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He descended from a long line of Bartelots (he re-antiquated his surname from Bartlett), and corresponded with Thomas Hardy (who was president of the Society of Dorset Men in London) on matters of local interest. Carl Schorske (1915?2015) was a leading American scholar of German society. He was in the first group of MacArthur Fellows (the so-called "Genius" grants) and he won the Pulitzer Prize in nonfiction for this survey of Viennese culture at the turn of the 20th century. Gottlieb is best-known for editing Joseph Heller's Catch-22 when he was at Simon and Schuster; he spent most of his career at Knopf, perhaps the most prestigious literary publisher in the US, with a five-year stint as the editor of The New Yorker (which shared ownership with Knopf). In the acknowledgements for this book, Schorske writes, "And finally, for turning the last mile into an unexpected delight, my thanks to the many in the house of Knopf who have produced the book so understandingly?especially Robert Gottlieb." First edition (first printing). A near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket whose somewhat ridiculously delicate gold paper shows fingerprints. This copy is inscribed, "For Bob, with unspeakable quantities of gratitude and admiration and just plain affection. Carl." Books signed by Schorske are uncommon, but not nearly as scarce as Pulitzer Prize-winning books inscribed to their editors. Bound in full modern sheep with gilt lettered label to spine, armorial bookplate of Admiral Duff (Norwich Duff 1792-1862) dated 1858 to first pastedown. In October 1805 Norwich served at Trafalgar on HMS Mars aged 13, the ship was captained by his father, Captain George Duff who lost his life that day by a cannonball. Major Duff whose name is signed in ink at the top of the title page was probably Sir James Duff (17521839) a British army officer, who fought in the Napoleonic wars and also at the Battle of Valenciennes commanding the guards' light infantry battalion in 1794. On 30 October he was promoted to major-general. 2 patches of light brown stains to fore-edges of 71 leaves, encroaching onto margins in various sizes, not affecting text, pale foxing affecting many margins, occasional other small minor spots and shallow creases, otherwise a good tight copy. 'Dick's excavations at Puntutjarpa Rockshelter not only yielded significant evidence of Aboriginal lives in the Arid Zone, but was one of the early, substantive, well-documented archaeological assemblages lodged with the Western Australian Museum. Re-analysis of the faunal assemblage has proven valuable in reappraising desert lives and ecosystems and recent re-excavation and use of some of Gould's charcoal samples from the Western Australian Museum collections has changed the interpretations of the site' (Brown University website).
