Octavo, 2 volumes, 823pp. Both volumes very good or better with some fading and darkening to the spines. Otherwise a crisp, clean set with sharp corners. Dust jackets both poor and in several parts, with most of the spine missing on Volume I and only the rear panel and flap present on Volume II. Lacks the publisher's slipcase. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Dreiser on the front free endpaper of Volume I: "Vol 1./For Dorothy/from/T. D./N. Y. Aug 1930." He wrote just his initials, not his whole name, but there is enough writing to indicate that this is definitely Dreiser's handwriting. While "Dorothy" isn't one of the women profiled in the "Gallery," she clearly must have known him personally, and rather well. Copies of the signed limited edition (published the same year) are not uncommon in the marketplace, but this is the only example we were able to find of a signed or inscribed trade edition. Despite regrettable condition of the dust jackets and missing slipcase, a particuarly unique set.

Printed by the well known Harold McGrath at the Hampshire Typothetae in Massachusetts. In a tan dustjacket that has creases to the top edges, light fading, and small tears to top edge and bottom of spine. The cloth binding has a few spots of fading on both covers. Without you, neither Camp David nor The Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty could have been brought to fruition. Cy." An excellent presentation copy. Ambassador Alfred (Roy) Atherton (1921-2002) was a diplomat, United States Ambassador to Egypt, Ambassador-at-Large at the Camp David Accords, and during his three-decade career, one of the primary architects of United States policy in the Middle East. Atherton joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 1946 and held various significant positions, including U.S. Ambassador to Egypt from 1979 to 1983. He was instrumental in the negotiations leading to the 1979 Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty, doing the shuttle diplomacy before the summit to ensure that Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat would attend. Atherton retired from government in 1985.

Condition VG+, slim 12mo., unpaginated, This copy #171 of a limited 300, signed by Frost on the limitation page. Blue cloth covers with cover and spine titles in gold. A charming little book made out of Frost's poem "How Hard it is to Keep from Being King, When it's in You and in the Situation," Frost's humorous blank verse narrative about the a fictionalized king Darious absconding the throne and his surprising actions in the aftermath. The book's spine and top edges are somewhat sunned, and the spine also is slightly cocked at the top, but otherwise the book is near fine, clean and clear and bright, with a couple of erased pencil notations on the pastedowns. The glassine dj, numbered in pencil to match the book's #, is browned on the spine and flap edges, with a couple small tears on the spine also, but is complete with only a very small chip on one cover. A nice copy of a rare Frost artifact. And with the dollar failing, what better to invest in than beautiful literary artifacts you can hold in hand and enjoy?

Your enthusiasm show in your production and certainly makes it pleasant for your guests. Alexander B Adams, 1970." Uncommon signed. Adams wrote nine books, including others on Thoreau, Audubon, Geronimo and Sitting Bull. A one-time bank VP, he became the president of The Nature Conservancy from 1960 to 1962 and then served as chairman from 1966 to 1969. This book is his survey of the environmental landscape of the seventies, with chapters on topics like the Everglades, dam building, national parks (Northern Cascades, Point Reyes National Seashore, and Redwood National Park), and much more. An interesting snapshot of this formative moment in American environmental history. A very good book with light soiling to pale cloth covers and a few light bumps to upper edges of boards, softening to rear lower corner, and a bookseller's pencil notations to FFEP and pastedown; in a very good jacket with wear/creasing to corners and tail, and three orange spots on front panel.

Very good first printing in good dustwrapper. The book is square and quite tight but with darkening/age toning to the paper stock which is of very poor quality. Creasing to the lower lead corners of the first 10 leaves. Foxing and spots to the prelims and paste downs. Two sections of gouging to the top edge. The dustwrapper is largely present but has been strengthened and repaired by tape. The attraction of this copy is the warm and lengthy contemporary inscription on the front endpaper to a close friend, dated October 1st 1960- 'Albert "Johnny" Johnston, my good friend, who read chapter I when it was a short story and told me to go on from there-with gratitude and affection and confidence in the rightness of his new career- Ed (E.L.) This copy inscribed by the author to an un-named recipient at the head of the front pastedown: "With the author's compliments, John Ward 1925". 8vo. xvi, 278pp. Blue cloth lettered in black at the spine and upper board, and with the black-stamped coat of arms of the Middlesex Regiment. With a photographic frontispiece portrait of the author, and ten captioned photographs over seven plates. A trace of wear to the backstrip ends. Some toning to the free endpapers, and a small dealer sticker to the base of the front pastedown. A very good copy. No dust wrapper. An account of the actions of the Middlesex Battalion in Siberia in support of the White forces of Admiral Kolchak during the Russian Civil War (Colonel Ward was effectively the senior British officer in the region). Fairly uncommon, and nicely enhanced by the author's signature.
