[Maryhill] [Art] [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover] 118.18 CAD SIGNED and inscribed by the author on the FFEP: 'Greetings from Sam Hill country! [Signed] John Tuhy.' First Edition, First Printing. Just faintly thumbed, clean and tight otherwise with sharp corners; DJ tips a bit rubbed, price intact. This labor of love, written by a distinguished Portland pulmonologist in his retirment, remains the definitive biography of the quixotic PNW business tycoon. 'Sam Hill (18571931), founder of the Maryhill Museum of Art, was one of the most colorful and influential figures in the Pacific Northwest in the early 1900s. He was a successful businessman, world traveler, builder of monuments, and early advocate of paved roads. Hill commissioned the Maryhill Stonehenge Memorial to honor World War I dead from Klickitat County, Washington. The monument was dedicated in 1918while the war was still rampantand completed in 1929. He was also responsible for the construction of the Peace Arch in Blaine, Washingtonrecognizing the close ties between the United States and Canada. It was dedicated in 1921. At Maryhill, Hill employed engineer Samuel C. Lancaster (18641941) and spent three years and $100,000 of his own money building experimental roads on the propertyso that skeptics could see the type of highways for which he was advocating. His activism eventually prompted the creation of state highway departments in Washington and Oregon. He was also a force behind construction of the Historic Columbia River Highway and the Interstate Bridge between Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington.' (From the Maryhill Museum website).

A complete set of Updike's crowning achievement, the Rabbit Angstrom series of novels. All four volumes are SIGNED by Updike, though "Rabbit, Run" is signed on a laid-in bookplate. "Rabbit, Run" has a few minor stains to the top edge and very mild edge-fading, but the dust jacket is nicer than usually found, with just a hint of creasing at the crown, and only the slightest fading to the spine; much less than usual, and scarce thus. That volume and "Rabbit Redux" are price-clipped. All three of the other volumes are fine in fine dust jackets. A very handsome signed set, which makes a stately centerpiece for any Updike or more general modern literature collection.
