130.18 CAD
As new condition gray boards with black cloth spine and silver spine lettering in an as new condition non-price clipped dust jacket. Signed by Senator Joseph Lieberman with blue marker on a bookplate attached to the inner front cover. "Drawing widely from his own experience as a politician and his pride in public service, Lieberman makes a passionate, hopeful argument for the value of public life - its place and necessity in our democracy and our need for more Americans to embrace it if we are to sustain our self-government. Lieberman asks fundamental questions about what standards of behavior should be expected of politicians in the sharply partisan, big-money, search-and-destroy atmosphere of politics today."

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1986 was awarded jointly to Stanley Cohen and Rita Levi-Montalcini "for their discoveries of growth factors." "Human beings develop from a single cell that divides to form new cells. These new cells then also further divide and multiply. Little by little, different types of cells with different functions are formed. Rita Levi-Montalcini has contributed to our knowledge of how this process works. In 1952 she succeeded in isolating a substance harvested from tumors in mice that caused vigorous nervous system growth in chicken embryos. The discovery of what are now known as growth factors has provided a deeper understanding of medical problems like deformities, senile dementia, delayed wound healing, and tumor diseases" (Nobel Prize website).

"President Grover Cleveland appointed Semple as the Governor of Washington Territory in 1887, where he served for one term until April 1889. After Washington became a state in November of that year, Semple ran as the Democratic candidate to be the first Governor of the State of Washington, however he lost to the Republican Elisha P. Ferry. In 1893, he successfully pushed a bill through the Washington State legislature to facilitate a means of financing privately owned canals by allowing them to sell reclaimed tidelands. With $500,000 of financing, he himself soon attempted such a canal connecting Elliott Bay to Lake Washington by cutting through Seattle's Beacon Hill: a more southerly route than the Lake Washington Ship Canal that was favored by Judge Thomas Burke and others aligned with the Great Northern Railway, and which was ultimately built. Douglas MacArthur on the front pastedown. When General MacArthur was relieved from his command in 1951 by President Harry Truman, he returned to the United States as a hero. He addressed a joint session of Congress, where he famously said that "old soldiers never die; they just fade away." But MacArthur had no intention of fading away. He was quickly mentioned as a candidate for the 1952 Republican presidential nomination, but on his speaking tour of the United States, it became apparent that MacArthur was more interested in settling scores with Truman than presenting a positive vision for the future. This book was an attempt to correct that public image, but by the time of its publication, it was too late. He endorsed Robert Taft for president in 1952.

Ambrose Everett Burnside (1824-1881), b. Liberty, Indiana; d. Bristol, Rhode Island. He was a graduate of West Point (1847) and served in the 2nd US Artillery in the Mexican-American War, and for two years afterward on the American western frontier under Captain Braxton Bragg, where he received a wound in the neck from an Apache arrow. In 1852 he was assigned to Fort Adams, Newport, Rhode Island, was married in the same year, and the next year resigned his commission and was appointed commander of the Rhode Island State Militia. During this period he founded the Burnside Arms Company. In 1861 he raised the 1st Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry Regiment, their two companies being armed with his Burnside Carbines. He saw action early in the War and was quickly raised to prominence, several times declining command of the Army of the Potomac; his military career was controversial, as it has been said he was promoted above his abilities, yet also that his defeats were a result of the failures of his subordinates. After the War he served as governor of Rhode Island, as well as director of several railroad and industrial concerns. He was the first president of the National Rifle Association (1871).

First edition. Boards lightly rubbed and a bit soiled, edges slightly faded with some loss of gilt from spine titles, owner bookplate on front endpaper, 1 inch split to rear endpaper along hinge but binding holding quite firmly, frontispiece lightly foxed, p. 61 toned as if something was once laid in. This volume is almost always found with heavily foxed pages and significant flaws to the boards and binding; the example here is surprisingly well-preserved in comparison. 1860 Hard Cover. 407, [1] pp. 8vo. On the title page is a device showing a female warrior, captioned 'Sic Semper Tyrannis' - a slogan the publisher and author likely regretted five years later when the same phrase was intoned by John Wilkes Booth immediately after he assassinated President Lincoln. Dedicated to Wendell Phillips, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry D. [David] Thoreau 'Defenders of the Faithful, Who, When the Mob Shouted, "Madman!" Said, "Saint!". A biography of the controversial figure responsible for the attack on Harper's Ferry designed to foment a slave rebellion. The author was himself a radical abolitionist who made his living as a journalist. Before working for Horace Greeley at the New-York Tribune, he submitted articles to papers in Michigan under the pseudonym 'Berwick.' His account of travels in the American South, entitled The Roving Editor: or, Talks with Slaves in the Southern States, was published the year before this volume, and included the content of interviews with slaves. That work was funded by anti-slavery philanthropist Gerrit Smith. This, the first published biography of John Brown, was announced by the publisher the day after Brown's execution.
