1987 FIRST PRINTING of First UK Edition -- WINNER of the 1987 Boardman-Tasker Award for mountain literature. Original navy boards with gilt lettering spine. Inscribed and SIGNED by team member Gareth Wood on the title page. Wood was the third member of the expedition and reached the South Pole alongside Swan and Mear. WITH commemorative, illustrated envelope SIGNED by Roger Mear and SIGNED by Robert Swan (the Gareth Wood signature on the envelope is a stamped signature; Mear's and Swan's signatures are hand-signed). The book is in fine condition with clean covers, no rubbing, tight binding, no owner writing or marks on any pages (other than Wood's signed inscription), no foxing. The original dust jacket is clean and bright, no fading, no rubbing, no tears, no chips, complete with publisher's printed price on front flap corner still present. The signed commemorative envelope is in fine condition. It has a 50c Ross Dependency postage stamp canceled at Scott Base Antarctica on 9 November 1985 meaning it was very likely signed by Mear and Swan during the expedition. Original maroon cloth lettered in gilt on the spine; cloth a little flecked and rubbed, with the spine sunned and a little unevenly faded; edges a little foxed; library plates, stamps and labels on the endpapers and title page (but see below); a few other minor signs of age and handling; overall, a very good copy. Mounted on the front pastedown is the bookplate of the 'Healesville Sub-Branch R.S.S.I.L.A.'. The bottom third of the bookplate is left blank, under the heading 'Author's Autograph', and has been personally signed in purple ink by Ernest Scott. The front free endpaper has the bookplate of the Reference Library of the Eastern Regional Libraries, and a June 1976 accession date stamp. We have sold many hundreds of volumes of this official history, edited by Charles Edwin Woodrow Bean (1879-1968), and copies signed by any of the authors are singularly rare in our experience. 'This book deals almost entirely with occurrences within Australia. It describes the background - political, social, industrial, economic - against which the war-effort of Australia was projected' (from the preface). The boards are clean and unfaded - just showing some light marks and rubbing commensurate with age and handling. Some light browning to the edges in places. Head and tail of spine slightly creased, but no serious bumps or creasing. Corners sharp. Top edge of the page block stained blue to match the boards by the publisher - now faded. All page block edges lightly foxed. There is a slight reading lean to the binding, but the spine is tight, with no loose pages. Internally also very good with no previous ownership inscriptions - just a small contemporary bookseller's label at the bottom of the front endpaper. Map endpapers showing North East Lowlands at the front and South Lowlands at the back. Some offsetting and foxing to the endpapers, and particularly to the first few pages. Interior pages clean. No internal creases or tears. Very thick quality paper used, which was much thinner in later post-war printings of the book. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, with the beautiful wraparound illustration by Brian Cook. The dustwrapper has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 8s. 6d. net at the top corner of the front flap.
