Broom: An International Magazine of the Arts, Volume 5, nos. 1-3 August through October 1923 Bound - Containing the first publication of Jean Toomer's "Kabnis" Containing the first partial publication of Toomer's short story "Kabnis", the final part and climax of Cane, divided between the August and September 1923 issues of Broom containing the beginning and ending chapters of the story. Toomer viewed the story as one of complete self-expression at one point writing "Kabnis is Me". The October issue leads with a fantastic Boni & Liveright advertisement featuring Cane and Waldo Frank's Holiday side by side and the August issue contains a review by Toomer of D. H. Lawrence's novella The Captain's Doll. The issues also feature contributions from such literary heavyweights as Virginia Woolf, William Carlos Williams, E. E. Cummings, and Robert Graves. Harold Loeb's Broom was among the more important literary magazines for Toomer as the American editor Lola Ridge was impressed by his writing and eager to champion him. It was at one of Ridge's parties in August of 1920 that Toomer first met Waldo Frank who would further support his literary ambitions. Toomer would finish the first draft of "Kabnis" in December of 1921 following his time spent as a substitute principal at a Black agricultural and industrial school in Sparta, Georgia Bound in red quarter cloth and blue cloth boards with "Broom" title lettered to spine, bound with the original front cover of the August issue designed by Jean Lurçat preserved; August issue bound without the final leaf of ads and rear cover; September and October issues bound without covers; margins have been trimmed quite a bit, ignoring these flaws the magazines would be in very good condition, previous ownership stamp to front free endpaper. [First Edition] Cassell's Magazine Illustrated / bound volume June to November 1902 / INCLUDING CLIFFORD ASHDOWN'S 'THE ADVENTURES OF ROMNEY PRINGLE'
805.18 CAD
In original red boards with gilt titling, call this hardcover bound volume of the Edwardian monthly magazine, "good-plus." From 1905 through his death in 1943 (and beyond -- posthumous story collections popped up well into the 1970s) former colonial surgeon R(ichard) Austin Freeman was celebrated as one of Britain's leading purveyors of detective fiction, the bulk of his tales featuring medico-forensic sleuth Dr. Thorndyke and his man, Polson. However, in collaboration with his friend John James Pitcairn (medical officer of Holloway Prison), Freeman actually wrote an earlier series of six tales featuring a character whose talents, powers of observation, and mastery of disguise easily matched those of Sherlock Holmes, but who turned those skills to the service of . . . crime. The original six adventures of gentleman burglar, con man and stock manipulator Romney Pringle were published in Cassell's Magazine from June through November, 1902, under the pseudonym "Clifford Ashdown." The tales were then gathered into a small hardcover book published by Ward Lock, dated 1902, and titled (straightforwardly enough) "The Adventures of Romney Pringle." Which pretty much disappeared. Six copies of that hardcover first edition are believed to remain in existence -- several of which have now emerged from the woodwork here on ABE. But authorities as notable as Ellery Queen have declared "The Adventures of Romney Pringle" the "rarest book in detective fiction" (though there are other nominees for that honor, of course.) R.B. Russell estimated the value of a nice copy of that stand-alone hardcover at about $2,200 in 2010 . . . though those stalking a copy today might be well advised to have $4,000 at the ready. But is that coveted small book REALLY the first hardcover edition? For not only do all six of the tales appear in this bound volume of Cassell's Magazine dated "1902.2" -- June through November of that year -- but they're accompanied here by the fine original illustrations by Fred Pegram, at the original "large octavo" magazine size -- some of them striking full-page plates with image areas of 5X8 inches! This bound volume also features a series of non-fiction essays by R. Austin Freeman on Britain's lighthouses, as well as profiles of Mark Twain and Thomas A. Edison (by other hands), this 668-pg. bound volume is rarely encountered.

[First Edition] The Cornhill Magazine. Volumes XII-XV. 1865-1867. Bound Set of Four Volumes. Smith Elder and Co. Trollope The Claverings
785.18 CAD
Bound publisher volumes of the periodical issues, comprising Volumes XII-XV of The Cornhill Magazine, issued by Smith, Elder & Co., London, and covering July 1865 through June 1867. The volumes are uniformly bound in handsome contemporary three-quarter red calf over red morocco boards, with spines featuring five raised bands, gilt compartments, and gilt titling. Marbled endpapers and marbled edges throughout. Octavo. A visually cohesive and striking mid-Victorian grouping, retaining strong shelf presence and period character. Profusely illustrated with full-page plates and in-text wood engravings by leading Victorian artists, these Cornhill volumes represent the magazine during a significant transitional phase following Thackeray's founding editorial period, when serialized fiction and illustrated essays continued to define the English literary marketplace. Includes the complete serialization of Anthony Trollope's The Claverings, later installments of Wilkie Collins's Armadale, and concluding portions of Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives and Daughters. Within these volumes appear the concluding installments of Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives and Daughters (including the editorial notice following her death), the later and final portions of Wilkie Collins's Armadale, and the complete serialization of Anthony Trollope's The Claverings, alongside contributions by Matthew Arnold, Anne Thackeray Ritchie, Francis Turner Palgrave, Charles Lever, and others. As part of the magazine's influential mid-1860s output, these volumes reflect the sustained literary prominence of The Cornhill Magazine in the Victorian periodical tradition. Condition: Interiors are generally clean and bright with only occasional foxing. Exteriors range Good+ to Very Good, with rubbing to leather at corners and joints consistent with age; one joint shows minor weakness but remains secure. Gilt decoration remains bright. One folding map called for in text not present. A solid and well-preserved example of a substantial Victorian literary periodical in original nineteenth-century bindings.
