Fine book in very good dust jacket. An historical adventure novel originally published in two parts between 1941 and 1945. Set in the late 10th century, it follows the life of Orm Tostesson (known as Red Orm) from his abduction as a youth to his adventures as a seasoned Viking warrior. The story is renowned for its blend of gritty action and dry, ironic humour, modelled after the style of authentic Old Norse sagas. The saga begins when Orm is kidnapped from his home in Scania. He is eventually captured by Moors in Spain, where he serves the Caliph of Cordova and is initiated into Islamic culture. After escaping, Orm's journeys take him to Ireland, the court of King Harald Bluetooth in Denmark?where he falls in love with the King's daughter, Ylva?and eventually to England, where he participates in the Battle of Maldon. The latter part of the novel details Orm's quest for hidden "Bulgar gold" in Kievan Rus and his gradual conversion to Christianity as Scandinavia transitions away from paganism. True First English-language Editions of Mahfouz's masterpiece, one of the greatest works in Arab literature, complete in three volumes, each inscribed by the lead translator (Hutchins). Translated by William Maynard Hutchins, Olive E. Kenny, and Lorne M. Kenny. Royal 8vo (233 x 151mm): [8],498,[4]; [6],422,[4]; [8],308,[4]pp. Attractively and uniformly bound in quarter cloth (maroon, pale green, and French blue, respectively) over paper-covered boards (mid-brown, deep beige, and pink), spines stamped in gold; saffron, speckled pale green, and pinkish-red end papers (each matching its dust-jacket border); photo-illustrated dust jackets. Briefly inscribed on each half-title page by Hutchins. Presumed first printings, dated 1989, 1991, and 1992 on copyright pages, with no additional printings listed, and with publisher's code BG. Truly a spectacular set, all volumes very tight, square, and giving every evidence of being unread. One end paper very slightly browned at margins, trace of lightening to upper edge of one board; jackets crisp, fresh, and bright (one back panel creased top and bottom, short closed tear to front panel of another). Extremely collectible. Originally published, in Egyptian, as Bayn al-Qasrayn (1956), Qasr al-Shawq (1957), and al-Sukkariyya (1957). Mahfouz was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988, the only Arab to be so honored. The Cairo Trilogy "chronicles the upheaval and change during the years 1917 to 1944 through the microscopic lens of a single family coming face to face with political events. Each of the three novels that comprise the trilogy was named after a street in Mahfouz' home city: Palace Walk, Palace of Desire, and Sugar Street, their titles illustrative of the composition of the Jamaliyya quarter of Cairo where Mahfouz spent his childhood and where cramped, squalid blocks of flats neighboured spacious mansions. . . . the most pertinent issue from the first pages of Palace Walk to the very last scene of Sugar Street is how Egypt arrives at and copes with questions of modernity and self-identity as it struggles to find a place in the world of modern nation-states . . . (Literary Encyclopedia) The Palestinian-American literary critic Edward Said valorized Mahfouz as "not only a Hugo and a Dickens, but also a Galsworthy, a Mann, a Zola, and a Jules Romains. " He was speaking not just to the author's seismic impact but to the sheer range of techniques he introduced into the Arab novel. N. B. [First Edition] The Last Train to Zona Verde: My Ultimate African Safari [FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING] Theroux, Paul [Used - Fine] [Hardcover]
77.18 CAD
Fine unread condition forest green boards, brown spine, and gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by Paul Theroux; Author Dedication and Preliminary Page Quotes. Illustrated with black-and-white maps. "Following the success of the acclaimed Ghost Train to the Eastern Star and The Great Railway Bazaar, The Last Train to Zona Verde is an ode to the last African journey of the world's most celebrated travel writer. "Happy again, back in the kingdom of light," writes Paul Theroux as he sets out on a new journey through the continent he knows and loves best. Theroux first came to Africa as a twenty -two-year-old Peace Corps volunteer, and the pull of the vast land never left him. Now he returns, after fifty years on the road, to explore the little-traveled territory of western Africa and to take stock both of the place and of himself. His odyssey takes him northward from Cape Town, through South Africa and Namibia, then on into Angola, wishing to head farther still until he reaches the end of the line. Journeying alone through the greenest continent, Theroux encounters a world increasingly removed from both the itineraries of tourists and the hopes of post-colonial independence movements. Leaving the Cape Town townships, traversing the Nambibian bush, passing the browsing cattle of the great sunbaked heartland of the savanna, Theroux crosses "the Red Line" into a different Africa: "the improvised, slapped-together Africa of tumbled fences and cooking fires, of mud and thatch," of heat and poverty, and of roadblocks, mobs, and anarchy. After 2,500 arduous miles, he comes to the end of his journey in more ways than one, a decision he chronicles with typically unsparing honesty in a chapter called "What Am I Doing Here?" Vivid, witty, and beautifully evocative, The Last Train to Zona Verde is a fitting final African adventure from the writer whose gimlet eye and effortless prose have brought the world to generations of readers." - from the inner front jacket flap.

First Edition, stated first printing. Hard cover, 4to in teal blue illustrated cloth with pictorial decoration printed in gold and black to front board and spine, in the original slipcase. Illustrated map end papers, numerous linocut illustrations within text in black and white, plus seven full page in color. xxvii, 561 [563] pp. Printed and bound in Llandysul, Wales. CONDITION. Fine, like new.** A classic travelogue debuting Twain's signature witty and satiric style. Departing from New York, the five month "great pleasure excursion" by steamer and rail takes the reader through, perhaps, some of the less expected sights in Paris, Spain, Gibralter, Tangier, Alexandria, Cairo and various Holy Land venues, circling northward toward the Black Sea past Constantinople and around to Athens toward stops in many Italian cities including Florence, Rome and Venice, Naples, Pompeii, and toward Cadiz, hence to Bermuda and finally returning to New York. First published in 1869, this was Twain's first book, assembled from letters published in correspondence to the Alta California Newspaper. Mark Twain or, Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), spent five months cruising aboard the steamship "Quaker City" promoted by the Plymouth Church of Brooklyn's Rev. Henry Ward Beecher. They departed New York on June,1867 with 165 carefully screened passengers, being promised the sight of "the ships of twenty navies--the customs and costumes of twenty curious peoples--the great cities of half a world.they were to "hob-nob with nobility and hold friendly converse with Kings and princes, Grand Moguls and the anointed lords of mighty empires!" (The "great pleasure excursion" included a visit to The International Exhibition in Paris.) This was a best-seller in its time and still remains excellent reading today.
