Harper (1863-1943) was an English author known for his travel and topographical works, in particular following the regions and roads of Britain. Oblong quarto. 11" x 8" approx. pp. [40]. With two folding maps & numerous illustrations. Bound in marble-grain silk cloth in two colours, gilt, bevelled edges, patterned end papers. A little shaken but secure. Minor wear to the spine and extremities. Clean within. A 'Very Good' copy. This scarce work details Charles II's wanderings and travels following defeat at the Battle of Worcester in 1651, and was inspired by the play 'The Royal Oak.' Following the battle he famously hid in the Royal Oak tree at Boscobel House before successfully fleeing England to Normandy in disguise. After the death of Cromwell, Charles II was restored to the throne. Written by Alexander Meyrick Broadley (1847-1916), who was a British author, barrister and social figure. He penned numerous historical works later in life, and made this pilgrimage across the route followed by Charles II before undertaking this work.
