This 1969 signed first edition was inscribed by Husen to the British economist John Vaizey, and most lately comes from the personal library of Anders Ericsson (1947-2020), "The Expert on Experts," the late cognitive psychologist known for his influential work on deliberate practice and expert performance, adding noteworthy provenance linking two generations of groundbreaking psychological theory in the history of modern psychology. Signed and inscribed "with kindest regards" by Torsten Husen to British economist John Vaizey, who specialized in education. 8 5/8" X 5 5/8". 309pp. Rather heavy wear to dust jacket, with chipping and open tears to edges, extremities, and to head and tail of spine, dust soiling to panels, and label to rear panel. FROM B&B: The DiMaggio Albums traces DiMaggio's life from the minor leagues to his major league retirement with a variety of unique archival materials, including news clippings, photos, posters, and more. DiMaggio played all thirteen seasons of his career with the New York Yankees and was selected as an All-Star thirteen times. With his exemplary hitting and fielding (he was nicknamed "The Yankee Clipper" because of how he sailed around the outfield) he helped power the Yankees to nine World Series titles. He holds the record for the longest hitting streak, at 56 games, which is considered one of the most statistically remarkable records in all of sports. Outside of baseball, he was known for his high-profile marriage with Marilyn Monroe. DiMaggio was one of the rare athletes that transcended his sport: his association with a bygone era of America was noted in Simon and Garfunkel's Grammy Award-winning song, "Mrs. Robinson." Ted Williams said, "His career cannot be summed up in numbers and awards. It might sound corny, but he had a profound impact on the country."

Octavo, 53 pages. Flush-cut quarter green cloth and yellow papered boards, with the full title page details repeated on the front cover; covers slightly rubbed at the extremities and lightly marked; front flyleaf removed; an excellent copy. 'These papers are written solely for private distribution amongst relatives and special friends; and, as my family is rather numerous and dispersed, the necessity arises of having them printed'. This copy is inscribed on the verso of the title page to 'Charlotte de S. Dutton with kind regards' and signed by the author. MacDermott, an 1829 pioneer of Western Australia before settling in South Australia in 1846, died in 1877. The provenance is most interesting: Charlotte de S. Dutton was the widow of William Hampden Dutton (1805-1849); her mother's maiden name was Da Silva. In 1849, William's brother Francis Stacker Dutton (1818-1877) married MacDermott's daughter Caroline. The Duttons and their pastoral property, Anlaby, were household names in South Australia for generations; to put them into context, 'While working at Anlaby in 1842 Francis had discovered with Captain Charles Bagot the Kapunda copper mine' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography').

The first edition of this very scarce biographical study of spy and major in the British Army John Andre, from American writer Winthrop Sargent, grandson of the Federalist Party politician of the same name, and with a portrait and letter from the author loosely inserted. This letter from Winthrop Sargent appears on the stationary of the Manhattan Club, the notorious social club founded in 1865 as the Democratic answer to the Union Club. Dated September 23rd 1866, a year after the club's formation, and addressed to Mr. Hack, the letter reads:'Dear Sir, Your [.] is just received on our return to town. The letters of John Andrews were (I fancy) fewer in the separate pamphlet form mentioned by you, under the auspices of the Hon. Charles Deane of the Map. Hist. Soc. [.] however is, I think, now in Europe. Perhaps if you were to apply to Hon. Robert C. Winthrop, President of the Map. Hist. Soc., he might put you in the way of obtaining a copy - or if you are unacquainted with them and would wish me to apply, I will cheerfully do so. Yours respectfully, W. Sargent.'An insightful exploration of the life of Andre, who was ultimately hanged as a spy by the Continental Army for assisting Benedict Arnold's attempted surrender of the fort at West Point to the British. Andre is typically remembered favourably by historians as a man of honour, with several prominent American leaders of the time - including Alexander Hamilton and Marquis de Lafayette - disagreeing with his fate.Only seventy-five copies of this first edition were printed.Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece of Andre, with a loosely inserted engraving of the author, along with the armorial bookplate of Charles H. Bart to the front pastedown.A fascinating and very scarce consideration of the life of this British spy. In a full cloth binding, with paper spine label to back strip. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with areas of fading to the cloth of the back strip, and perimeters of the front board. Rubbing to paper spine label. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Illustrated with black-and-white map and graphs. ".designed to clarify contemporary China and advise how U.S. "engagement" with China may best move ahead. There's lots here, but clearly presented, with a great chronology." - Library Journal. "China is a country of compleixty and contradiction. It has become an economic powerhouse and an increasingly influential global player, raising the prospect that it will be a future rival to the United States in world affairs. At the same time, China's unbalanced growth fuels unsustainabilities and inequities in its political and social system, raising longer term questions about its domestic stability. Abroad, China is widely welcomed as an engine of economic growth, even as its military modernizes and its increasing footprint creates palpable discomfort about its impact on global stability and the international system. For Americans and others in the international community, coping with the rise of China has emerged as the key challenge of the 21st century. Formulating an effective strategy to do so, however, demands a far richer and more nuanced understanding of China's fundamental social, political, and economic context than that shaping the current public debate in the United States and elsewhere. China's Rise: Challenges and Opportunities is the latest book from a multi-year project launched by two of the world's preeminent public policy research institutions, the Peterson Institute for International Economics and the Center for Strategic and International Studies. It examines the critical facts and dynamics underpinning China's rise and suggests policy responses that will maximize the opportunities for China's constructive integration into the international community. The first book from the project, China: The Balance Sheet, has become a standard reference for policymakers, journalists, and students around the world. It fulfilled and unmistakable need for authoritative and balanced discussion of China's contemporary economic, military, political, social, and international policies and perspectives. It hs been widely quoted by top officials of both governments, including US Secretary of the Treasury Henry M. Paulson and China's former Vice Premier Wu Yi. This new book seeks to take the analysis several important steps further, connecting China's development directly to US and global interests and offering a series of possible policy responses." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

With a high rye content, this iconic bourbon is perfectly aged in American White Oak barrels with the deepest char for more character. Distillery Information In 1891, Thomas Ripy built the Old Hickory Distillery in Tyrone, Kentucky, near Lawrenceburg, on the former site of the Old Moore Distillery. After Prohibition, the Ripy family (Thomas had died in 1902) repaired the distillery and began to again produce bourbon. The Ripys sold the bourbon produced at this distillery to various wholesalers who bottled bourbon under their own brands. Austin Nichols was one of these wholesalers. The "Wild Turkey" brand is said to have arisen after an Austin Nichols executive, Thomas McCarthy, took some warehouse samples on a wild turkey hunting trip in 1940. The bourbon proved so popular among his friends they denyd to ask him for "that wild turkey bourbon." Austin Nichols began to bottle Wild Turkey in 1942.
