As new condition white boards with a white spine and gold spine lettering contained in an as new condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Dedication; Preliminary Page Quotes; Prologue; Epilogue; Acknowledgments; Notes; Bibliography; Illustration Credits; and About the Author. Illustrated with black-and-white paintings and full color front and rear endpaper paintings. Signed by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Jon Meacham, with thick black Sharpie at the lower section of the full title page. "Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jon Meacham explores the seven last sayings of Jesus as recorded in the Gospels, combining rich historical and theological insights to reflect on the true heart of the Christian story. For Jon Meacham, as for believers worldwide, the events of Good Friday and Easter reveal essential truths about Christianity. A former vestryman of Trinity Church Wall Street and St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, Meacham delves into that intersection of faith and history in this meditation on the seven phrases Jesus spoke from the cross. Beginning with "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do" and ending with "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit," Meacham captures for the reader how these words epitomize Jesus's message of love, not hate; grace, not rage; and, rather than vengeance, extraordinary mercy. For each saying, Meacham composes an essay on the origins of Christianity and how Jesus's final words created a foundation for oral and written traditions that upended the very order of the world. Writing in a tone more intimate than any of his previous works, Jon Meacham returns us to the moment that transformed Jesus from a historical figure into the proclaimed Son of God, worshiped by billions." - from the inner front jacket flap. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Jon Meacham is a Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer. The Carolyn T. and Robert M. Rogers Chair in the American Presidency and distinguished visiting professor at Vanderbilt University, Meacham was educated at THe University of the South, is a former member of the vestries of St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue and of Trinity Church Wall Street, and was honored by the Anti-Defamation League with its Hubert H. Humphrey First Amendment Freedoms Prize. A fellow of the Society of American Historians, Meacham lives in Nashville with his wife and children.

As new condition red boards/white spine/gold spine lettering contained in an as new condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes Preface and Acknowledgments. Illustrated with black-and-white drawings. Signed by the author, on a specially inserted page by the publisher, with thick blue Sharpie. The page states: "This first signed edition of Dear Chandler, Dear Scarlett: A Grandfather's Thoughts on Faith, Family, and the Things That Matter Most by Mike Huckabee has been specially bound by the publisher." (see photograph). "I wrote these letters so that long after I'm gone, you'll know that I loved you, had great hopes for you, and wanted to give you my best advice on living in this tough world. If I can't be there with you, I hope my letters will act as a sort of reminder of me - as if I'm standing there beside you, whispering in your ear, and putting my arm around your shoulder." - Mike Huckabee. "Mike Huckabee has written a book that touches all the bases, from hilarity to profundity. I loved it and so will you." - Bob Barker. "As grandparents, we want to leave something behind to our grandchildren, ensuring that our memory lives on. Governor Huckabee's book is a perfect example of what we will do in order to preserve our legacy so that future generations will continue to feel our presence." - Neil Sedaka. "It is so very important to always have one's eye on the young - to nurture them and rear them in the most loving and intelligent of ways. Mr. Huckabee understands this and acts accordingly. He does it with grace and with wisdom. Thank you, sir." - Robert Duvall. "Mike Huckabee has worn many hats throughout his life: pastor, politician, governor, presidential candidate, talk show host, rock bassist, pundit, husband, and father. But since his first grandchild was born, he's found that the role of grandfather is more satisfying than just about any of the others. Huckabee wanted to give something to his grandson, Chandler, that would last forever. He began drafting a series of letters to Chandler recounting heartwarming stories from his past and the bittersweet lessons learned along the way. With the birth of his granddaughter, Scarlett, just a year later, Huckabee was further inspired to convey his love and wisdom. [The book] touches on the timeless topics of faith, love, family, overcoming adversity, and staying true to your values in the face of failure and temptation. For instance, Huckabee tells how being forced to pick up pecans from the trees in his yard taught him the value of hard work. (We were told that if we wanted to eat that night and sleep in a bed instead of in the yard, we'd pick up the pecans.") Years later he learned the real meaning of love after watching a friend care for his dying wife who could no longer recognize him. ("He loved her not because he enjoyed it or found pleasure in it, but because he had promised that he would never leave her until death parted them. And here he was, keeping that...

I recommend Michael Ruse's review, which is not only a review of the book but also a review of the other reviews of the book: "Admayration. Review of The Growth of Biological Thought", The Quarterly Review of Biology, Vol. 60, 1985, pp. 183-192. On p. 394, Mayr gives Darwin's birthdate as February 9, 1809, a mistake for February 12. This was corrected in later printings.

First Edition In English. 4to. pp xix, 450. Bound carbon typescript with some handwritten corrections, possibly by the translators Eden and Cedar Paul. Green cloth lettered gilt at the spine. Slightly dusty else very good indeed. Blind stamp of 'University Typewriting Office, Lloyds Bank Chambers, Carfax, Oxford.' From a house in Berkeley Square, London, once owned by the Bedford family. A curiosity - this English translation of the German work 'Askania Nova' published in Berlin by Neuman-Neudamm in 1930 was never published in English and exists only in bound typescript. The Duke of Bedford's zoo at Woburn is mentioned in the 'postface' of the book as, with Askania, one of the three private zoos in the world, the other being Blauuw in Holland. It appears that the Zoo (or the Duke) commissioned the distinguished couple Eden and Cedar Paul to translate this sizeable work - an expensive commission. They were major translators of best selling woks by Emil Ludwig, Arthur Schnitzler, Stefan Zweig and Rene Fulop-Miller. The English book was never officially published. Cedar Paul, nee Gertrude Mary Davenport (1880 Ð 1972) was a singer, author, translator and journalist, her husband Maurice Eden Paul (1865 - 1944) was a British socialist activist, physician, writer and translator. Minor corrections in a neat small handwriting on many pages, possibly by the Paul's or the Duke himself. One handwritten page about where ,in the original, the illustrations were placed. The author Woldemar [1877-1946] and his elder brother Friedrich Jakob (Eduardovich) von Falz-Fein [1863-1920] represented the third generation of this family of Ukranian landholders who raised animals on their large estates, near Askania-Nova in Kherson Oblast, Ukraine, located within the dry Tavriya steppe. Friedrich, in 1890, as the oldest son took over the management of Askania-Nova and proceeded to develop it not only as a sheep and horse ranch (supplying the Russian army with horses) but as an animal park and a nature preserve. In 1897 he created a zoo and a botanical garden In 1899, nearly extinct wild Przhevalski horses were brought from the Gobi steppes to Askania Nova. His animal park became a model for other such ventures, studied by zoo directors and zoologists who came from all over the world to visit its million acres of wild horses, antelope, buffaloes, eagles, every kind of bird and animal. In 1914, the Czar visited Askania-Nova and was so pleased that he made Friedrich a baron (adding "von" to the hyphenated family name). On March 1919 the Askania-Nova was confiscated from the Falz-Fein family by the Red Army as part of the state nationalization program. The last owner who refused to evacuate to Germany was the wife of Friedrich Falz-Fein, Sofia-Louise Bohdanivna (Gotlieb) Knauff, who was shot by two Red Army Guardsmen for refusing to surrender her estate. On April 1, 1919 the Askania-Nova was declared the People's preserve park. During both World War I and World War II the...
