A hint of spotting to text block edges, else fine; fine unclipped dust jacket. Overall, a beautiful copy with some excellent signatures. As the dust jacket blurb announces: "Written in a style that magically evokes the winning spirit of turn-of-the-century New York. The Giants of the Polo Grounds has all the classic moments of those fabulous years: Mathewson's three shutouts against the 'invincible Athletics" in the 1905 World Series.McGraw's four straight pennant wins.Hubbell's unbeatable screwball striking out Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, Simmons, and Cronin in the 1934 All Star Game.and much, much more!" Willie Mays started playing professional baseball at 16 in the Negro Leagues and was soon drafted by the New York Giants. He went on to play 21 seasons with the team, winning a World Series with the team in 1954. His over-the-shoulder catch in that World Series is one of the most iconic moments in sports history. A 24x All-Star and a 12x Gold Glove award winner, Mays was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1979 and was voted to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team in 1999. Monte Irvin played nine years in the Negro leagues with the Newark Eagles before getting the call up to the major leagues in 1949. One of the first players after Jackie Robinson to break the MLB's color line, he played seven seasons with the New York Giants, winning a title with the team in 1954 after sweeping the Cleveland Indians. Hoyt Wilhelm was an 8x All-Star pitcher who was also on the 1954 championship team. Interestingly, he entered the major leagues at the relatively advanced age of 29 because of prior military service but still managed to play 21 seasons in the league, retiring when he was nearly 50 years old. Johnny Mize was a 10-time All-Star who won an incredible five straight World Series titles with the New York Yankees (1949-1953).

[Signed] [First Edition] Waiting In The Wings Noel Coward [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover]
417.68 CAD
First edition first printing of a near fine hardcover with a slight lean, foxing & toning of pages, in a very good dustjacket with foxing, wear to the extremities and reading wear to the bottom of the spine. This play is set in a retirement home for actresses and focuses on a feud between two of the actresses(one played by Sybil Thorndike) who once both loved the same man. The play opened in 1960 at the "Duke of York's Theatre" in London's west end. Coward dedicated this book to Sybil Thorndike, and is signed by her and her actor husband Lewis Casson, who is also in the play to an unknown (by me) recipient who has affixed a photo of Casson's 85th birthday presumed to be celebrated on stage on the day of his birthday, Oct. 26th during the play's run on the second free endpaper. The glue bled through the paper and attached itself to the rear of the ffep and was separated at some point leaving a paper pull. There is a tag line above Casson's signature but I cannot decipher the last word. A unique and rare copy.

"For Alan Levy, with happy memories of Noel, les Avants and Vienna. From Graham Payn and Cole Lesley, June 1978." After his World War II military experience in Army intelligence, he began writing TV scripts before beginning his career as an author in 1950. Gerson's primary focus was on historical novels, mostly stand-alone, with American history receiving considerable attention. Gerson also wrote a large number of biographies and biographical novels. These included several on U.S. presidents, such as Andrew Jackson, James Polk, and Theodore Roosevelt. Gerson was one of the most prolific writers of modern times, with over 150 books verifiably counted to his credit. His work can be divided into three major parts: standalone novels, including biographical ones; series novels, usually under a house pseudonym; and nonfiction. [Signed] [First Edition] THE DOWIE DENS O' YARROW. PATON, J. [Joseph] Noel: [Used - Very good] [Hardcover]
307.39 CAD
First edition, with a suite of proof engravings. Signed and inscribed by the artist. Folio. Publisher's original green pebble-grained cloth with decorative borders and titles in gilt to the upper board. Inscribed "Proof before letters" in pencil to the front pastedown. Illustrated with 6 fine proof engravings. A very good copy, the binding square and secure with a 3cm split to the joints at the head of the spine, shorter splits to the joints at the foot of the spine, a few marks to the boards, and wear to the corners. The contents with some faint creasing to page edges and some occasional light scattered foxing are otherwise in very good order. Signed and inscribed by Joseph Nöel Paton in ink to the head of the title page "To Miss Fergus / with all good wishes of / J. Nöel Paton / Jan. 1861". A beautifully illustrated edition of this Scottish border ballad of conflict, love and loss, with six full-page engravings by the Scottish artist, illustrator and sculptor Sir Joseph Nöel Paton (1821-1901). Initially studying at the Dunfermline Art Academy, Paton spent most of his life in Scotland, although did briefly attend the Royal Academy, London in 1843. Whilst there, Paton met John Everett Millais, who asked him to join the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He declined this offer, despite his continuing to paint in the Pre-Raphaelite style, and became a painter of historical, fairy, and allegorical subjects. Paton also had a great interest - and significant expertise - in the fields of Scottish folklore and Celtic legend, frequently choosing to paint or illustrate these subjects. His edition of 'The Dowie Dens O' Yarrow' clearly demonstrates this, typically combining his Pre-Raphaelite tendencies with his love of Scottish history and culture. The present copy - likely presented to a friend or patron - contains a wonderfully sharp suite of proof engravings, and, uncommonly, is inscribed by Paton himself.
