The Note by the Author introduces the book as an independent version of work she presented for the twenty-seventh volume of the Proceedings of the United States National Museum, published also in 1904. Includes many drawn depictions of the different isopods discussed within the book, which are taken from the findings and descriptions provided by studies that Richardson cites. **CONDITION: Very Good, with some marks to front and back boards, some slight wear to tips and a bit at edge, and seen at top and bottom of spine. Hinges in order. Moderately age-toned pages, though text and images remain vivid. **CONTENTS: A collection of information about the life, biology, and taxonomy, of numerous species of Isopods. Isopods are a type of crustacean, commonly pill-shaped, and are also evolutionarily older than the dinosaurs. The book mentions a number of studies which either provide information on species of isopod already known, or present a new species of isopod along with their basic physiology. **AUTHOR: Washington D.C.-born biologist Harriet Richardson (1874-1958) specialized in the field of marine invertebrates, or crustaceans. She was one of the first women to do so, and known as "the First Lady of Isopods". She worked at the National Museum of Natural History, now part of the Smithsonian, and eventually was appointed Collaborator in the Division of Marine Invertebrates. In this field she earned her Ph.D. from Columbian University, (now George Washington Univ.) She worked unpaid for the Smithsonian for around twenty years, and in that time she was able to identify 70 new genera and nearly 300 new species of isopods and tanaids, a similar family of crustaceans. This pamphlet mounts an eloquent defense of the decision to increase taxes in order to finance England's involvement in the Nine Years' War (1688-1697). On the heels of the Glorious Revolution (1688), England became embroiled in a European-wide war against France. England was part of a coalition with the Holy Roman Empire, the Dutch Republic, Spain, Savoy, and Portugal, but the combined monies and forces of these countries could not defeat France outright. Fighting broke out in continental Europe and its surrounding seas, but also in the Americas and India, ultimately draining the European nations' coffers. In England, taxes were raised, not without some grumbling, to support the cause. Eventually, the sustained financial toll of the War pushed each nation to negotiate peace, even though no side emerged the victor. The Treaty of Ryswick was signed in 1697. As demonstrated by this pamphlet, England's worsening economic situation could be felt as early as 1691. Yet, this pamphleteer defends the hike in taxes, citing among multiple reasons that English citizens have a duty to protect the Commonwealth: "We are unhappily plunged into a War; but this, as a less evil, was to be chosen before other mischiefs our Enemies designed us. Upon the good success of this War depends our prosperity for many years; if we miscarry and France prevail, we are in a fair prospect of being undone" (7).

Larson [Used - Fine] 935.18 CAD 8vo. 711 pages, blue cloth no DW, in very good condition. WITH LONG LETTER (3 PAGES) SIGNED BY LARSON Ex libris Martin Alfred Larson (March 2, 1897, in Whitehall, Michigan ? January 15, 1994, in Phoenix, Arizona) was an American historical revisionist and freethinker. He specialized in the history of Christianity and wrote on its origins and early theological history, best known for his assertion that Jesus Christ and John the Baptist were Essenes. Larson was a long-term member of the Institute for Historical Review. Larson stated that he spent more than four years studying ancient Egyptian, Persian, Brahman, Jain, Buddhist, Judaistic, and Essene cultures, which all influenced the Essene Order from which the Christian Gospels originated. According to Larson, the Essenes absorbed the eschatology and metaphysics of the Zoroastrians and later the Pythagoreans and ancient mystery cults of Greece and Asia Minor. Larson studied the Dead Sea Scrolls literature and commented that the Essenes "engrafted a Christology which combined a Persian with a Messianic Judaic concept, which, in a period of crisis, they personalized in a martyred Teacher of Righteousness whom they expected to return upon clouds about 35-50 B.C. accompanied by a myriad of angels to conduct the Last Judgement." Larson concluded that Jesus was an Essene who convinced himself he was the incarnation of Christ destined to redeem mankind, so he left the Order to create a mass movement.
[Signed] [First Edition] The Construction of Christian Poetry in Old English GARDNER, John [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover] [Signed] [First Edition] The Construction of Christian Poetry in Old English GARDNER, John [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover] 485.18 CAD First edition. Fine except for a small bump to the gutter of the front board, in a near fine, age-toned dustwrapper. Inscribed to Nicholas Delblanco and his wife: "To Nocholas and Elena with love, John Gardner." Gardner and acclaimed novelist and critic Delbanco first forged a friendship when Delbanco hosted Gardner during a reading tour at Bennington College in 1974. Delbanco ended up hiring Gardner for the English Department at the College. They and their families began a close professional and personal relationship in which each of the authors strove to critique the other's works in private and promote them in public, Gardner touting Delbanco as "one of the country's best novelists." Each acknowledged the contribution of the other in developing both their theories of literature and for specific elements of their respective works, whether it be Delbanco using Gardner's title *Stillness* for one of his novels or Gardner using Delbanco's writing to help clarify the husband-wife relationship in one of his own works. Delbanco's home and family became a refuge for both Gardner and his first wife during their messy divorce. Following Gardner's death in a 1982 motorcycle accident, Delbanco became Gardner's literary executor; editing and contributing an introduction to Gardner's posthumously published *Stillness and Shadows*. Delbanco's daughter Francesca, who was an occasional babysitter of Gardner's children, and who has herself published two well-received novels, *Ask Me Anything* and *Midnight in Manhattan* was the Dedicatee of one of Gardner's acclaimed children's books, *The King of Hummingbirds*. A significant association copy.
