Distillery Information The River Laggan journeys many miles through Islay, cutting its course through ferrous rocks, peat bog, moss and grassy mound, ‘til it finds itself at the Western harbour town of Bowmore, Islay’s capital. Their whisky distillery produces some two million litres annually and adheres to strict traditions; production methods have scarcely changed in two centuries. Founded in 1779, by John Simpson, Bowmore is Islay’s oldest distillery. Following purchase in 1837, by William and James Mutter, the distillery was resold in 1892 to the Bowmore Distillery Company Ltd. Changing hands twice during the late 1920s, in 1963 the distillery was purchased for £117,000 by Stanley P Morrison. Bowmore has had a long affiliation with Japanese pioneers Suntory, who acquired a stake in the company during the late 1980s. In 1994, they bought the company outright. Bowmore enjoys a curious middle-ground as far as flavour is concerned; far from being a lighter offering - à la Northern Islay-based Bunnahabhain - the spirit is not as heavily peated nor as smoky, as its three Southern cousins surrounding Port Ellen.

First edition. Octavo. 480pp. Illustrated. Fine in fine dust jacket. Inscribed by Rear Admiral O'Kane to a fellow Congressional Medal of Honor-winner: " To Carlos Ogden, Richard H. O'Kane." O'Kane and his submarine the *Tang* averaged more than double the amount of kills as any other American submarine, and O'Kane despite a relatively short tour, was the leading submarine skipper in the war. In one action he sank five Japanese ships in 70 seconds. He also pioneered new techniques in submarine rescues, saving 22 American aviators. In 1944 the *Tang* was sunk and O'Kane spent the rest of the war in a Japanese prison camp. He was one of the most highly decorated sailors of the war, winning three Navy Crosses and three Silver Stars in addition to his Medal of Honor. Carlos Ogden was a first lieutenant who singlehandedly took out three gun emplacements (an .88 and two machine gun nests) at Cherbourg, France, armed only with an M1, a grenade launcher, and some hand grenades, despite having been hit a glancing blow from a machine gun bullet to the head. Inscriptions linking two Medal of Honor-winners are uncommon.

It was sold by his widow, Irene Roosevelt Aitken, over the objections of the National Park Service and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library. This item was purchased by Roth, Horowitz, Anderson, Inc in 2001, before the collection went to public auction. Skyward is the first book by polar explorer Richard Byrd, where he details his 1928-1930 expedition to Antarctica, his flights to the North Pole, and his flights across the Atlantic Ocean. For his endeavors, Admiral Byrd was honored by then Governor of New York, Franklin D. Roosevelt, with a ticker-tape parade in 1930.

Baldwin (18421923) was one of only 19 individuals to receive the Medal of Honor twice, earning the distinction for separate acts of valor during the Civil War and the Indian Wars. Baldwin began his military service in 1861 with the 19th Michigan Infantry, notably leading a countercharge at the Battle of Peachtree Creek in 1864, where he captured two Confederate officers and a regimental guidon. His second Medal of Honor was awarded for a daring 1874 rescue mission at McClellan's Creek, Texas, where he led an attack against a numerically superior Native American force to save two young girls from captivity. Baldwin also served in the SpanishAmerican War and the PhilippineAmerican War, eventually retiring as a major general in 1906. During World War I, he served as Adjutant General of the Colorado National Guard.
