The WRAPPER is also in near Fine condition with just one tiny indentation to the front panel and a hint of creasing to the edges. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been signed by the Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney to the title page. A collection of poems based on 'Sweeney Astray', Heaney's interpretation of the Irish poem 'Buile Suibhne' published by him in 1983. The medieval tale speaks of Suibhne mac Colmáin, King of the Dál nAraidi, who is driven insane by a curse and leaves battle to spend years wandering the Irish landscape. Heaney's edition won the 1985 'PEN Translation Prize for poetry', and extracts are published here with revised stanzas. The text is accompanied by atmospheric black and white photographs by the American photographer Rachel Giese. Giese was born and raised in New York City, but began traveling to Ireland in the late 1970s, drawn to the light, the weather, and the history. In 1987 she published 'The Donegal Pictures', which Heaney (who wrote the introduction) described as "attend[ing] to the speechless life in things and places and people. Donegal is not only recorded here, it is reimagined." The present book was published in the same year in which Giese moved to Ireland, "Seamus became interested in what I was doing" she later said in an interview with Muriel Adrien, "he asked if I would like to collaborate on a revised edition of Sweeney Astray, his book-long adaptation of an ancient Irish text about the life of Sweeney, one of Irish myth's hero/anti-heroes (much is paradoxical in Irish literature), that he had previously published, this time with photographs. I spent about 4 years working on this project and it was finally published in 1992. I knew both Heaney's text and the Ulster landscape well and it was a joy to do." First Edition, Signed by author to title. Blue cloth with gilt lettered spine. 32 full page black and white photographic plates, complete. Internally clean with occasional minor chipping to page extremities and several plates are slightly loose but attached. Boards show some rubbing to extremities and marking to boards, and slight rubbing to spine gutters. A scarce book in commerce, more so as a signed copy. An interesting travel study by a solo female traveller, Rachel Humphreys, published a year before women were finally permitted to join the Royal Geographical Society, in 1913, to which she was elected along with a further 163 other women explorers and academics. In her dedication she remarks that this is to give an account of the 'wonderful things seen in that dear land of light and colour.' It documents her travels across northern Africa, remarking on the people, the customs, the infrastructure and history, of where she travels. Furthering the theme of female travel, the majority of photographs were taken by Miss G. Hume, Miss C. White, or the author. She starts in Algiers, where she visits mosques, markets, and remarks on the status of women in Algerian society, comparing their station to that of women in other 'oriental' nations, and concluding that they are still mistreated by men who won't see their face till the wedding. Having finished in Algiers, she and her friends move off to the dessert, taking an antiquated train by wealthy English standards that could not be called 'de-luxe', but which did provide foot warmers, until they reach a stop over at El Guerrah in the mountains, which they reach on New Year's Eve, and in the middle of a rare snow storm for the region. They continue onto Biskra where she is led around by a local guide, Amr, and whilst in the market place, again remarks on the station of the local women, often adorned in jewellery but not frequently allowed out due to a high rate of murder for what they carry. This seems a consistent theme throughout the travelogue, an interest in the culture, from a very much colonial perspective, as a curio of a more mysterious continent and time, but also with genuine concern for women like her, as she continues around the continent, travelling then to Egypt and down the Nile. A scarce piece of feminist travel history.
