Lampman (1907-1980) wrote and published 37 children's books over her long writing career, and often featured educational themes, difficult subjects, and focused on the darker aspects of Pacific Northwest history, exposing bigotry, misogyny, and the plights of Native Americans, Asian-Americans, and other minorities.

Aboriginal Chipped Stone Implements of New York. 2. Polished Stone Articles used by the New York Aborigines before and during European Occupation. 3. Earthenware of the New York Aborigines. 4. Aboriginal Occupation of New York. 5. Wampum and Shell Articles used by the New York Indians. All titles are Bulletins of the New York State Museum. Laid in are two autographed letters signed by William Beauchamp.The first is 3 pages and the second is 2 pages. In the first letter, Beauchamp lists works on American Indians that could be helpful in the research on the Iroquois. In the second letter, Beauchamp lists corrections for the printer on a unstated book on American Indians. "(Beauchamp) He became, among white men, the greatest authority on the history and institutions of the Iroquois.Especially noteworthy was his work as archeologist of the New York State Museum. Preparing thirteen bulletins for the Museum, he threw much new light on the past of the aborigines. He possessed unusual skill in sketching Indian relics. A compilation of Native American thoughts and culture by Seton, including a contribution by Mary Austin at rear. Seton was prominent naturalist writer and artist, perhaps best known for his multi-volume work Lives of the Game Animals and his role in the "nature-fakers" controversy. He also had a steady fascination with Native Americans, promulgating both enthusiasm for and misconceptions of indigenous cultures. Very good with rubbing in places to orange cloth, and spine perhaps ever so slightly darkened. Binder's glue has darkened the pastedowns along the hinges. With two identical labels from the previous owner at the top corner of the front free endpaper. No dust jacket.

Bound in contemporary tree calf, red morocco spine label lettered in gilt. Rubbed edges; marks to spine; preliminaries age-toned, else bright. Peter Augustus Jay (1776-1843) was the eldest son of first United States Chief Justice John Jay, and was himself active in New York state politics, as well as the abolitionist movement. Elizabeth Clarkson Jay (1823-1895) was the seventh of his eight children. A well preserved copy.

Overall, a solid, Very Good copy in an unclipped, Good only dust jacket, which has creased tears and short chips to the spine ends and corners, weakening with splits to the hinges, sun fading the spine, some rubbing to the covers, and wear with short tears to the edges. The jacket is wrapped in Mylar.
