LEONARD BERNSTEIN THE J0Y OF MUSIC SIMON & SCHUSTER 1959 1ST SIGNED. I am very pleased to be able to offer a copy of one of Leonard Bernstein s early books about music and more particularly about music in America. On offer here: "The Joy of Music" by Leonard Bernstein. The Joy of Music stands as a classic for all lovers of music who wish to experience it through the eyes, ears, and mind of one of the most inspired, and inspiring, music intellects of our time. Employing the creative device of "Imaginary Conversations" in the first section of the book, Bernstein illuminates the importance of the symphony in America, the greatness of Beethoven, jazz, and the art of composing. The book also includes a photo section and a third section with the transcripts from his televised Omnibus music series. This medium-sized hard cover book (6 ½ x 9 ½ inches 305 pages) was published by Simon & Schuster of New York dated 1959 and the Fourth Printing of the First Edition (so stated). The book is bound in gray cloth with black decorations and silver gilt titles on cover and spine. This book includes Bernstein s autograph perhaps acquired in some other form (the former owners were musical professionals and associates of Bernstein) and taped to the front endpaper (where it has now darkened from age). Laid-in are a series of five or six newspaper clippings from the New York Times from mid-October 1990 just after Bernstein passed. Condition: This book is in very good condition albeit not without some signs of ageing. The hard covers are dust-dulled and faded on the spine and margins of the boards. The top and bottom of the spine are a bit frayed from bumping and the spine label is worn. Inside there is a neat bookplate from the former owners and the aforementioned Bernstein autograph. The interior pages are all clean and bright and unmarked. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. The NY Times clippings are toned and darkened but still intact.

[Signed] [First Edition] LEONARD BERNSTEIN: The Man and His World Briggs, John [Bernstein, Leonard; Ralph Sylvester and Stathis Orphanos Association]
860.18 CAD
SIGNED and inscribed by Leonard Bernstein on the FFEP in black felt pen, 'For SO + RS / [Signed] / '89.' 275pp. 12mo, two-toned black and red cloth with printed photo image of Bernstein on the upper black front cover, lettering stamped in gilt; B/W photo plates. Exceedingly clean and sharp, a FINE copy; DJ tips worn, price clipped, clean and bright otherwise. Briggs chronicles 'Bernstein's meteoric rise, at the age of twenty-five, to the conductorship of the New York Philharmonic' as well as scoring West Side Story, On the Waterfront, and many other major Broadway musicals. Although Briggs depicts Berstein as a happily married family man, by this point he had been having affairs with men and women for many years. It was in California where Bernstein first lived openly as a gay man in the 70's and met Stathis and Ralph. He signed this and two other books with a greeting for his last Christmas before dying in October of 1990. Of particular note is this book's association with the prominent LA gay couple, Ralph Sylvester and Stathis Orphanos. In addition to Stathis's highly regarded photography, the two operated the great fine-press publishing concern, Sylvester & Orphanos.

[Signed] [First Edition] The Natural History of a Yard (signed) Dubkin, Leonard [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover]
410.18 CAD
Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Matilda Bargan, a good friend and staunch booster. Leonard Dubkin." Uncommon signed. An early work of urban nature writing: an account of the three years Dubkin and his daughter spent observing their small yard and its wildlife in Chicago. Notable for including a child as a key observer and character when the usual pattern of nature writing, then and now, is largely to exclude the domestic and familial. Dubkin was a journalist who became dedicated in his books to everyday nature in the Windy City; a small park in Chicago is named after him. Patterned paper boards, red cloth spine, red top stain. Near fine in with a little sunning/toning to board edges. In a very good jacket with rubbing to edges, slight wear to corners, and one quarter-inch tear at top edge of front panel near spine.
[Signed] [First Edition] Among the Trumpets: Stories of War Horses and Others Leonard Nason [Used - Very good] [Hardcover]
785.18 CAD
Among the Trumpets: Stories of War Horses and Others by Leonard Nason OVERALL CONDITION: VERY GOOD Inscribed on both list of works and title pages, signed on list of works and dated with location on title page: "To Lt. Colonel and Mrs. Malcolm Byrnes from Leonard Mason in appreciation/at Benning, Georgia Jan 31, 1942." (Formerly Fort Benning). 309 pages. Top edge stained black. First edition, first printing. Leonard Nason really captured what it was like to be an enlisted man in WW I. There are very few so-called "heroes" in his stories. They are mainly privates and sergeants who are trying to survive the war. Often they are goof offs, gold brickers, and men who just want to avoid duty. They are average men who just wanted to survive somehow. The stories are often black comedies with Nason finding humor in the horrors of war and destruction. His work is just not about WW I but about men thrust into cataclysmic conflict and how they deal with the horrors of war. He avoided the romanticism of war and wrote about its harsh realities and how people truly coped - "how it was." Allan Leonard Hastings Nason (his full birth name) was an untamed spirit, and it shows in his writing. He wrote about war and soldiers, and his characters are not respectful of authority. Typically, they are trying to find a way to come out ahead, though not at the expense of the war effort. His accounts of war focus on an individual in relation to the whole war machine, and the way the machine grinds all down. The book is in VERY GOOD+ collectible condition. Colorful, unfaded, clean boards. Very slight spine lean, firm hinges and joints, tight pages. Lightly rubbed spine tips and edges. Top two corners gently bumped. Light foxing and age toning to edges. Foxing to endpapers. Interior is clean with no writing or wear - text block is bright with no writing, stamps ex libris marks or creased pages. The scarce dust jacket is in GOOD+ to VERY GOOD- condition - unclipped and colorful with light rubbing and soiling; edge wear creasing, chipping and small tears (mostly closed via blind side with book tape), sunned spine. Larger 1" closed tear on rear panel, more aggressive chipping along crown and heel of spine. Foxing to flaps and reverse side of dust jacket.

[Signed] [First Edition] The Ominous Parallels: The End of Freedom in America PEIKOFF, Leonard [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover]
433.18 CAD
SIGNED by author Peikoff and introduced by Ayn Rand, a fine, highly collectible copy of "the first book by an Objectivist philosopher other than myself" (Rand, Intro). Peikoff's thesis demonstrates that philosophy is the motor of history, the fundamental cause of history's major trends, and the power that "determines the destiny of nations." The Ominous Parallels illuminates in detail the role that the fundamental ideas of Germany's most respected philosophers -- Kant, Hegel and others -- played in shaping elements of pre-Nazi culture and in preparing that culture to embrace the Nazi's murderous ideology. In doing so, Peikoff shows the connection between seemingly esoteric, abstract philosophical theory and the blood-soaked practices of the Holocaust. A must for Holocaust collectors seeking to explain "Why?". "We dare not brush aside unexplained a horror such as Nazism." Light foxing to paper edges in a fine, unclipped jacket. Book #Pv2232. $398.
