Andrew Mackerel has a simple problem - a very modern liberal pastor, more apt to quote Oscar Wilde than the Apostle Paul, he wants to take a second wife, while the town is still busy commemorating his recently departed first. De Vries, a longtime 'New Yorker' contributor, had a wonderful sense of humor that ranged from subtle to laugh out loud. Kingsley Amis called him "the funniest serious writer to be found on either side of the Atlantic." INSCRIBED on the front endpaper. 260 pp. Near fine in turquoise cloth (some toning to pages) in a a good only dust jacket with several small chips and edgewear. A photograph of presumably of Anna Döhmann (5 3/4 x 4 1/8"), as stated in pencil on verso, with tissue guard. An announcement to honor the poet Walter von Molo on his 70th birthday, with b/w offset portrait of von Molo, and one letter size note signed Maria Schmelzer, 1925. Alfred Mohrbutter's was a designer and a promoter of the Artistic Dress, a movement that rejected fashion in favor of beautiful materials and simplicity of design. It arguably developed in Britain in the early 1850s, influenced by artistic circles such as the Pre-Raphaelites, and Dress Reform movements. In his books and essays, Mohrbutter initiated a thorough and detailed campaign to emphasize the dangers of fashion, and proposed to counter them with a timeless garb that was designed by adhering to basic aesthetic principles. These principles included an appreciation of the female form's natural beauty, a concern for women's bodily health while stressing the garment's logical structure and ornament. By 1901 he had established a relationship with the fashion house Gerson and sold his work via the larger business.His 1903 book, "Das Kleid der Frau" (The woman's dress) functions as a catalog for his business. Twenty-two of the 55 b/w photographs in the book represent his own designs, so are 12 b/w hand-drawn illustrations. Perhaps most commercial are the book's eight stunning tipped-in color plates (at center) depicting models which illustrate the thirty-two fabric combinations available through Mohrbutter.The thirty-two fabric combinations are reproduced in another set of eight color plates at rear with four additional b/w pages of advertisements for titles of the Koch Verlag. Amundsen had originally planned an expedition to repeat Nansen's drift with the Fram through the Arctic Ocean, and presumably to try for the north pole, but support for the project fell with the announcement of Cook's & Peary's accomplishments. He then turned toward the south, even though Scott's plans to attempt the south pole were well known, and was severely criticized (mostly in Great Britain) for competing with Scott. The two polar journeys were in marked contrast, and form part of one of the greatest dramas of exploration - Amundsen made the trip with dogs and skis, and with little difficulty, reaching the pole a month before Scott's party; Scott and four others reached the pole, but died on the return, just short of safety, after an heroic but ill-planned trip, dragging their own sleds. This set bears the ownership and annotations of Lieut. Victor Campbell, who was in charge of the Northern party. See colour illustration. Herbert Erik Tillander (1909 - 2006) was a Finnish Consul General, a jeweller and CEO. He was Managing Director of A. Tillander Oy from 1939 to 1974. He developed an internationally used diamond grading scale. Herbert Tillander's parents were jeweller Alexander Theodor Tillander (1870-1943) and Edith Hildur Gallen. Tillander graduated from education in Helsinki in 1927 and was a trainee between 1930 and 1933 in Stockholm, Frankfurt, Paris and London. He graduated as a goldsmith at the Gemmological Association in the United States and in 1937 at the Gemmological Institute of America in the United States, and at the Finnish Goldsmith in 1949. In the 1960s, Tillander developed the so-called Nordic Diamond Nomenclature and Classification because the classifications developed in the United States did not fully meet local needs. He studied the history of diamond grinding since the 1970s, and in 1995 published the work Diamond Cuts in Historic Jewelery 1381-1910. He also published other works on gemstones as well as genealogy Torppa and Diamond: Chronicle of the Tillander Family (1990). Approximately 11 ¾ inches tall.
