A controversial novel at the time, about the affair of an author-politician who recants socialism and has an affair with a graduate student. The book was obviously based on Wells and his affair with the women's rights activist Amber Reeves. The novel also pokes fun at Beatrice and Sidney Webb, two prominent socialists, whose characters are thinly disguised and everyone in intellectual Britain knew who he meant. The novel was serialized in the literary magazine, The English Review, but initially no British publisher would touch it. As a result, the first edition is the American version, which came out in 1910. According to Wells' biographer Michael Sherborne, the sales of this book doubled that of any previous Wells novel. Wells told a friend around this time, "My personal unpopularity is immense but amusing & people listen with blanched faces to the tale of my vices & go & buy my books." (Quoted in H. G. Wells: Another Kind of Life, p. 211). Edition information from The Eric Korn Collection of H. G. Wells by M. E. Korn (typescript produced by Serendipity Books). First edition, second issue (MCMXI on title page; all page edges trimmed; first quote on title page correctly attributed to G. H. Lewis; rear ads [10], [4], [16] pages). A very good copy in salmon-pink cloth, with the spine faded, as usual. This copy has Wells's typical, generic inscription on the front free endpaper, "With kind regards fr. H. G. Wells." In addition, there is a sheet with draft telegrams in Wells's hand to his American publisher seeking to delay the American publication of the book because Heinemann had agreed to bring out a British version in the spring (of 1911). In the end, Heinemann decided not to publish the book and the American publisher went ahead with its version. This copy probably belonged to a reviewer as it has a penciled list of page numbers and notes on the rear pastedown. There are also narrow bands of tape residue on the front free endpaper and the telegram draft.

[First Edition] Marriage; and, The Passionate Friends ? H. G. Wells; Two First Editions; Macmillan & Co., London, 1912 Wells, H.G. [Used - Very good] [First Edition] Marriage; and, The Passionate Friends ? H. G. Wells; Two First Editions; Macmillan & Co., London, 1912 Wells, H.G. [Used - Very good] 285.18 CAD First Editions, thus. First Printings. Two volumes sold as a uniform set: Marriage and The Passionate Friends by H. G. Wells. Published by Macmillan & Co., Limited, St. Martin's Street, London, 1912. Hardcover in the publisher's original sage green cloth bindings, blind-stamped with decorative Art Nouveau-style vine motifs and gilt lettering to front boards and spines. Gilt top edges; deckle-edged fore and bottom edges. Bindings are sound and square. Both volumes show light, honest shelf wear concentrated at spine crowns and heels, with bumped corners and mild rubbing to boards. Marriage shows a lightly starting rear inner hinge; The Passionate Friends shows a gentle spine lean. Pages in both volumes are clean, light, and unmarked. Marriage bears a previous owner's pencil signature on the front endpaper dated 1928. Both volumes retain their original advertisements at rear. Printed by William Clowes and Sons, London. Marriage is one of Wells's major Edwardian novels, exploring social convention, gender roles, and emotional freedom through a candid examination of love and institutional marriage. The Passionate Friends is a more introspective and philosophical work, framed as a reflective letter from Stephen Stratton to his son, recounting the formative love of his life. The latter novel was adapted for the screen multiple times, including versions directed by David Lean (1948) and produced by Paramount (1952), underscoring its lasting cultural resonance. Together, these two first editions represent an important moment in Wells's transition from speculative fiction to psychological and social realism. Uniformly bound examples such as this, retaining their original decorative cloth and clean interiors, are increasingly sought by collectors of early twentieth-century British literature and Wells material. Additional pictures are gladly provided on request. Books will be carefully wrapped and boxed securely for safe handling during transit, with international shipping available. HARDCOVER. Hardback copy in dark green cloth boards with gold gilt lettering and blind stamped design to front and spine. Volume in 8°, pp.406+ 10 book catalogue to rear. No dustjacket The Research Magnificent is a 1915 novel by H. G. Wells. The text of this novel of ideas presents itself as a book that has been written as the result of a promise to a dying man. William Porphyry Benham is a man who has lived a life devoted to a complicated, protean idea: "that he had to live life nobly and thoroughly." He has left behind him "half a score of patent files quite distended [with papers] and a writing-table drawer-full," and the novel is by implication what his friend White, who has promised to "see after your book," has produced to acquit himself of the promise, since the papers themselves are "an indigestible aggregation." Benham is a man of means due to curious circumstances: his mother left his father, a schoolmaster, for a wealthy man named Nolan who died soon thereafter, but not before leaving "about a third of his very large fortune entirely to Mrs. Benham and the rest to her in trust for her son, whom he deemed himself to have injured." His mother subsequently marries a great London surgeon and becomes Lady Marayne; her indiscretion is forgiven and she enjoys a position of privilege. The bulk of the novel recounts Benham's effort to live nobly, which brings him into conflict with his mother, with his friend Prothero, a schoolboy chum who becomes a Cambridge don, and with his wife, Amanda, a young woman he loves passionately but then leaves behind in England to travel the world (India, Russia, China) in search of wisdom. It is in Johannesburg, South Africa, that Benham is fatally shot while attempting to stop soldiers firing at strikers.

[Signed] [First Edition] Things to Come H G Wells [Used - Very good] [Hardcover] [Signed] [First Edition] Things to Come H G Wells [Used - Very good] [Hardcover] 5288.24 CAD A scarce, signed, first edition copy of HG Wells' 'Things to Come' dedicated in Wells' hand to his son, Anthony. Wells has signed the half title to his son, Anthony West. Lacking dustwrapper, as is usual with this work. From the estate of Katharine 'Kitty' Church. Kitty Church was a British neo-romantic painter who was married to the author and literary critic Anthony West to whom this work is addressed. West was the son of Rebecca West and H.G Wells. He is best known for the novel 'Heritage' which was a thinly disguised autobiography as it follows the life of a boy who grows up neglected and ignored by his famous parents. His mother famously threatened to sue him if the work was published in Britain. This is the film story based on the material in Wells' 'The Shape of Things to Come'. This science fiction work speculates on future events up to the year 2106. Several of Wells' short-term predictions in this novel would come true such as the aerial bombing of entire cities and the development of weapons of mass destruction. This screenplay adaptation was released in 1936 and was directed by William Cameron Menzies. A very scarce copy of this work, with important provenance. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Spine is cocked. A few handling marks to the boards and a little loss to the head and tail of spine. Author's inscription to the half-title. Internally, generally firmly bound. Slightly strained at page 48. Pages are bright, with just the odd spot. Light ink mark to the head of page 49 and to the top of the fore edge, matching the ink Wells has used. Very Good

Original quarter tan cloth and brown paper-covered boards binding, gilt titling on front cover, paper spine label, edges of text block untrimmed. Publisher's device printed in red on the title page. Photogravures protected with full page tissue guards, book is protected with a clear, archival Grafix Dura Lar dust wrapper. CONDITION: Fair/Good. Light soiling and rubbing to paper-covered boards with damp stain at upper right of front cover and larger area of rubbing and paper loss at upper part of rear cover. All binding corners bumped. Wrinkling to cloth at head of binding. All ten photogravures present and intact with several having 1 or 2 corners unglued. Marginal tear 1/4 inch pg. 77 (see close-up photo) resulting from toning to uncut front edge. Usual (normal) offset from the photogravures to opposite pages. Internal text pages and photogravures in fine condition, free of foxing and toning. DISCUSSION: Perhaps the darkest, most pessimistic of H. G. Wells' literature, dealing with the irreconcilable gulf between rational thought and the mysterious forces arising from our imaginations. This is a groundbreaking twentieth century private press book, marking the rare instance of a world-class author and world-class artist/photographer planning and working collaboratively on a private press book, fully integrating the photogravures with text rather than retrospectively searching for pre-existing photographs as "best fit" for the text. This is one of only 60 copies of the Mitchell Kennerley edition issued in Great Britain in 1915 with Grant Richards' title page, numbered and signed by both Wells and Coburn. Scarce.
