Humphrey Carpenter died shortly before the book was completed, it was then completed by James Hamilton. Signed on the titlepage by James Hamilton & John Murray VII. Hornsby, an African American and a private in the double page photo of what we assume is Company "C" on the two unnumbered leaves following the title-leaf, ends up being a communications operator for Company "C" so may have had been more well informed than most of his companions. Hornsby and many of the other soldiers in this unit appear to have been Texans.

He was born in Kirtland, Ohio, to parents who were early followers of Joseph Smith. His father suffered greatly in the Missouri persecutions, being one of those who participated in the Crooked River Battle. John R. Young arrived in Salt Lake with the Jedediah M. Grant Company in October of 1847. He later served as company chaplain, as well as captaining a couple of his own companies assisting emigrants over the plains. Inscribed by John R. Young to Anton H. Lund, on a piece of paper that has been mounted to the front pastedown. The slip states, "Presented to President Anton H. Lund, in timidity- (?) that the little book will be interesting to you. Anton Henrik Lund (1884-1921) was called as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1889, and in 1890 he succeeded Franklin D. Richards as Church Historian. Later, he served as First Counselor to two Presidents of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Joseph F. Smith and Heber J. Grant.

The first edition, in a handsome Bayntun binding, of an illustrated travelogue through France and Italy, accompanied by numerous chromolithograph plates by watercolour artist Alexander Henry Hallam Murray (1854-1934), younger brother of the volume's publisher, John Murray IV. The geographical sketches, penned by Henry Woodd Nevinson (1856 â" 1941) and Montgomery Carmichael (1857â"1936), catalogue a journey from Dieppe to the South, avoiding Paris, which continues along the Italian Riviera into Tuscany with excursions to Verona and Venice.
