With the author's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper of the Holy Innocents. The inscription reads, 'To Eira, With very best wishes from Brenda (alias Kate Sedley)'. The other volumes are also inscribed by the author, who offers love and best wishes, and alternates between signing off with Brenda, and her pen-name Kate. Sedley is best-known for her medieval whodunnits featuring Roger the Chapman, who gives up his monk's cell to peddle wares on the road. Whilst the earlier two volumes are published by Headline publishing, Nine Men Dancing is published in large print by the Severn House Large Print. Bound in the publishers original cloth binding, and hardback binding, found in the original dust wrapper. Externally, very smart. Lightly bumped to the head and tail of the spine, with a white mark to the front board of the Holy Innocents. Internally, firmly bound. A scarce volume signed by author, a biographical work detailing his time as a conservator of forests in Kenya and Nigeria whilst working for the colonial government. He was allegedly accepted through rites and ceremonies into some local tribes due to his love of the forests, and so this is also an interesting anthropological work.

This volume forms the second part of Jardine's 2 part work on Ruminants; part of the Naturalist's Library (Mammalia, volume IV). The binding has been rebacked relaying the original spine and is sound, clean and tight. The front board is well coloured with slight fading down the spine edge. The back board has some dark spotting mainly in the top quarter. The original green endpapers are present with professional repair at the joints. Contents: listing of current titles; half title; engraved frontispiece portrait of John Hunter; vignette title page showing an American Bison; 2 further title pages; advertisement; contents; Memoir of John Hunter; appendix; text including numerous engravings and 31 hand coloured plates pp 204. Really a lovely set.** "ARBORETUM ET FRUTICETUM BRITANNICUM" was the magnum opus of the prolific, influential Scottish botanic polymath, JOHN CLAUDIUS (J.C.) LOUDON, F.L.S., H.S., &c. (1783-1843). Author, agriculturist, architect, town planner, natural historian, gardening magazine publisher and --most significantly--inventor of the arboretum. He was born near Glasgow, later educated at Univ. Edinburgh in agriculture and botany among other subjects, while apprenticing at the nursery of a Mr. Scot in the nearby Edinburgh district of Easter Dalry. A year of botanic travels followed. His later career was made more difficult because of several severe disabilities, including the loss of an arm. He famously planned and established the Derby Arboretum in 1840, directly influencing the Americans Frederick Law Olmsted, and later corresponded with some of the most notable British, American and European nurserymen, botanists and estate owners of the day. Patronage of the Duke of Northumberland included provision of the artist G.R. Lewis to record a number of the numerous engraved "tree portraits" from Syon House.
