The additional signatures and inscriptions are as follows: "C. E. Lofgren, Personnel Officer", "Best Wishes, John Buys. Byrd, Exp. 192?, Seaman 1930", "Chas. L. Kessler, Byrd Expedition 1926-28-30. Seaman + Dog driver". Byrd's signature appears on the portrait frontispiece and all the other signatures are on the dedication page. The blue cloth boards are bright but the front has some scuff marks located near the lower right corner. The exterior also has some light bumps and scrapes but corners are good. Interior binding of the text pages is tight. No cracks at boards though the front hinge does have a few small holes in the front end page has a few white marks as well, likely caused by insects. Stated first edition on the copyright page along with a publication date of Autumn, 1930. No other handwriting found in the book, no bookplates, no library markings. The two foldout maps at page 416 are present and are in good shape. This is a unique signed copy and not one of the numbered editions that are commonly available.

Skyward is the first book by polar explorer Richard Byrd, where he details his 1928-1930 expedition to Antarctica, his flights to the North Pole and his flights across the Atlantic Ocean. His next book, Little America, published in 1930, offers an official account of his exploration of the Antarctic and his flight to the South Pole. His final book, Alone, published in 1938, details his time at Bolling Advance Base, a weather station in Antarctica.

(DAB 6, 92) Includes a first day cover from Admiral Byrd, dated 1961 and addressed to Grace Tully. This copy is inscribed on the half title: "To Grace Tully / The young lady who has contributed so much to her country during these critical years, I present this volume with enduring appreciation for her friendliness and courtesies to me and with high regard and esteem. Richard E. Byrd." Grace Tully (1900-1984) was a longtime private secretary to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. She joined Roosevelt's staff in 1928, when he was Governor of New York. She communicated frequently with Admiral Byrd, as the intermediary between Byrd and Roosevelt, both longtime friends. Tully became Roosevelt's primary secretary in 1941 after his previous secretary, Marguerite "Missy" LeHand, was incapacitated by a stroke. She managed the President's correspondence, typed dictations, and handled confidential matters during World War II. Tully was with Roosevelt when he died in Warm Springs, Georgia in April, 1945. A few years later, she published "FDR: My Boss," a memoir of her time working with the President.

Darling is described as a fireman and a hard worker, and "The City of New York" was Byrd's flagship for the expedition. A great ASSOCIATION COPY, given the personalization of the inscriptions seemingly presented to a fellow expedition member, who almost certainly is Dr. Dana Coman, medical director on the expedition, as this title came with 2 other titles definitely from Coman's collection. The book is Very Good in the original green cloth, stamped in gilt front board and spine, with faint image of ship stamped front board and a penguin to spine, illustrated with black and white photos. . A few marginal marks and notations in ink, most notably at Coman's bio, p. 229, where the notation reads "Oh ! that there were more poets in this funny old world". It was sold by his widow, Irene Roosevelt Aitken, over the objections of the National Park Service and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library. This item was purchased by Roth, Horowitz, Anderson, Inc in 2001, before the collection went to public auction.
