931.15 CAD
First edition, first printing. SIGNED by Murakami to title-page. Likely to remain a rare copy. One of a small number of signed copies distributed to independent bookstores within the UK. A beautifully executed example of Murakami's valuable signature (all the more special for deviating from the usual bookplate or tipped-in editions), and signed in blue fountain pen ink. Very Fine (as new) in dust-wrapper. This is one of few copies complete with the exclusive, promotional postcard set that contains nine of Murakami's UK book covers, each showcasing the iconic designs by Suzanne Dean, Creative Director at Vintage. The postcard set is immaculate, and retains the wraparound band, as issued. The eight masterly stories in this new collection are all told in the first person by a classic Murakami narrator. [Signed] MURAKAMI T: The T-Shirts I Love. ***SIGNED U.K. FIRST EDITION - RARE BOOKPLATE*** Murakami, Haruki [New] [Hardcover]
345.32 CAD
First edition, first printing. A rare copy of this author's fascinating non-fiction release, prominently and clearly SIGNED in black marker to the publisher's authorised and specially designed ""t-shirt"" bookplate (which, incidentally, provides excellent and, as it were, built-in provenance). Collectors will be aware that the quality of the author's water-based pen signature on these shiny bookplates varies significantly: many examples are compromised in terms of collectable appeal as they display a faint, or pale grey, signature. Signed copies, however, that are sharp and DISTINCTLY black appear relatively uncommon and in any case are of much higher interest. A small format hardcover. As New in dust-wrapper. A great item and likely to prove popular since it perfectly captures the sheer oddity of this marvellous author. [Signed] [Title in Japanese]: The Art of Translation MURAKAMI, Haruki and Shibata Motoyuki [Fine] [Hardcover]
2535.18 CAD
First edition. Small octavo. Text in Japanese. Jacket art and three illustrations in the text by R.O. Bechman and his son Nicholas Blechman. Fine in about fine dust jacket with small light crease at the upper front cover. A book about literary collaboration appropriately collaborated on between Murakami and Motoyuki, a translator who is widely venerated in Japan for his translations of English language literature (mostly American) books into Japanese including books by Thomas Pynchon, Paul Auster, Richard Powers and Edward Gorey. This copy Signed (and perhaps inscribed) by Murakami in Japanese and with his stamp in English and additionally by Motoyuki in both Japaense and English. The jacket of the book depicts a man standing in front of a copy of Orwell's *1984*, watching in dismay as a robot translates the text into bits and bites. Murakami and Motoyuki reportedly chose the art as an example of collaboration by two artists (the Blechmans) and by the depicted translators (human and robot). This copy accompanied by an original artist's proof of the jacket design in two colors, which is Signed by both R.O. and Nicholas Blechman. Provenance on request.

According to the Translator's Notes, this is the first author-authorized issue published outside Japan since the first Japanese edition of 1987. A somewhat aimless young man, Toru, arrives at university in Tokyo amid the culturally- changing 1960's. Toru is bound by loyalty to a childhood friend who died, and feels compelled to help a young woman, Naoko, who has never worked through her grief at the death of this mutual friend. Their story is a journey of quiet intensity which takes them on literal journeys from the city to a mountainous retreat in search of mental clarity and love. The book is also full of humor, has been translated into 50 languages, and adapted to a prize-winning 2010 movie. A beautifully designed version of a powerful novel.

[Signed] Killing Commendatore Haruki Murakami [New] [Hardcover]
3481.23 CAD
UK Hardback First Edition 1st printing in brand new unread condition. This beautiful book is signed to a book plate by Murakami and numbered 12 of only 100 copies made. It is housed in a special wooden box with a metal clasp. Included in the box is a calligraphy pen and two rubbers. The parcel was opened only to check contents and take photos. We found a slight defect in that there is some transfer of ink from the inside of the front board to the first page, see two photos showing the top and bottom of the page. We understand this was quite common with this production. It is very minor and a book restorer would have no problem rectifying this. We have decided to cut £400 from the price we would have listed it at, and also offer free international insured shipping. After taking the photos the box containing the book has been re-wrapped in the original publishers tissue paper, showing 12/100. We also have lots of additional photos available to view on request. If you are a Murakami collector, you will know how very rare this book is and is unlikely that any copies will remain available to buy in the future.

[Signed] First Person Plural, The Lives of Dagmar Godowsky (Signed) Dagmar Godowsky [Good] [Hardcover]
413.18 CAD
First edition, (vi), 249 pp. Inscribed by author ""with love to cousin Leonard, Dagmar, March 1958"". In light blue cloth with dark blue titles and design on the spine and front cover. Front cover is damp- stained along fore edge and rear cover has lighter water spotting along the edge. Spine is sun darkened. But the contents are quite clean and bright, so the dampness did not affect the text at all. A small inventory number is ink-stamped at the top of the rear pastedown. No other marks or damage. No DJ. This book itself is fairly uncommon in the trade, but I am unable to find another signed copy currently available anywhere, and a search of historical auction records does not find any signed copy having been sold in the past. I am aware of just one other signed copy in a private collection. Dagmar Godowsky (1897 –1975) was an American silent film actress, who was quite popular during the 1920’s, but, as with many silent film stars, did not make the transition to sound films, and so her popularity faded after her last picture in 1926. Her father was the celebrated composer Leopold Godowsky, and as a result, she knew and interacted with virtually all of the major celebrities of the time from both the film world and the music world. In 1958, she published this candid autobiography (""apparently uninhibited but in fact heavily self-censored""), which, for the 1950’s, was quite open about her many romantic relationships. In it she wrote, ""I lived only for pleasure and I spoiled my own fun. Where was I running? From whom? Little feet running around the globe. Nothing but circles, and I never once bumped into myself."" Her story may have been ""self-censored"", but in the book, she named Enrico Caruso, Arthur Rubinstein, Jascha Heifetz, Charles Chaplin, Igor Stravinsky, and Rudolph Valentino among her ""great loves."" When queried about the number of husbands she had, Godowsky responded, ""Two of my own, my dear, and several of my friends'."" (It must be noted that Rubenstein’s biographer later disputed some of her claims about her involvement with the great pianist.) Overall, a very scarce signed copy of an engaging narrative of a fascinating life.
