First edition, first printing. SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY. Uniquely inscribed to title-page by the author to the former head of CBS and Sony: ""For Howard Stringer. Hope you enjoy this! Best wishes from David Roberts."" A lovely, bright copy - and a great, if somewhat surprising, association! Stringer was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1999. This is the third book in the author's popular murder mystery series, set in class-ridden middle England during the 1930s, and featuring Lord Edward Corinth & Verity Browne. Fine indeed in the nice dust-wrapper, just a tad lightened to jacket spine. Offered by D B WATERS RARE BOOKS: Professional, full-time booksellers of fine, select 1st editions, established in 1998. THE BOOK OF GALLANT VAGABONDS is a collection of biographical essays on historical adventurers who defied convention in pursuit of discovery and independence. Featured figures include explorer John Ledyard, Egyptologist Giovanni Belzoni, poet-turned-trader Arthur Rimbaud, and others. HENRY BESTON was an American writer and naturalist, and is considered one of the fathers of the modern environmental movement. His now classic observations of Cape Cod are captured in his classic, The Outermost House, written after Beston spent what he called ""a year of life on the Great Beach of Cape Cod"", and has been called one of the motivating factors behind the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Author Rachel Carson said that Beston was the only author who ever influenced her writing. Beston married writer Elizabeth Coatsworth in 1929. So it turns out that the Secretary of the Navy during World War II may have had a soft spot in his heart for tree sparrows. The book is inscribed to him by the author on the first front end paper. The inscription reads 'To The Honorable Frank Knox Secretary of the Navy, Congratulations on your good work. With Kindest Regards and Best Wishes, Virginia Holton, August 21, 1940, New York City.' Knox had been named as Secretary of the Navy in July of 1940. He was also the Republican vice presidential candidate for president in 1936. Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy of the book for sale anywhere on the Internet. From his Wikipedia profile: 'William Franklin Knox was an American politician, newspaper editor and publisher. He was also the Republican vice presidential candidate in 1936, and Secretary of the Navy under Franklin D. Roosevelt during most of World War II. On December 7th, 1941, Knox flanked by his assistant John O'Keefe walked into Roosevelt's White House study at approximately 1:30 PM EST announcing that Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor. Knox was mentioned by name in Adolf Hitler's speech of December 11, 1941, in which Hitler asked for a German declaration of war against the United States. Born in Boston, he attended Alma College and served with the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War. After the war, he became a newspaper editor in Grand Rapids, Michigan and a prominent supporter of the Republican Party. He advocated U.S. entrance into World War I and served as an artillery officer in France. The 1936 Republican National Convention nominated a ticket of Alf Landon and Knox, and they were defeated by Roosevelt and John Nance Garner in the 1936 election. After World War II broke out, Knox supported aid to the Allies. In 1940, Roosevelt appointed him as Secretary of the Navy in hopes of building bipartisan support. He presided over a naval buildup and pushed for the internment of Japanese Americans. Knox served as Secretary of the Navy until his death in 1944.' From 1940 to 1944, he took very good care of this book. And over the last almost 80 years the good care has continued. Remarkably, the book can be accurately rated Near Fine. You can see the yellow covers in the photos. They are quite clean. There's a speck of a spot on the spine. The black lettering and design on the front and the black lettering on the spine, are both bright and unworn. The corners and edges are in very good shape. The spine ends have just a little bit of crinkling. The top page edge is a dark red or maroon. It is very clean. The middle and bottom page edges are also clean. The book is pretty square, the spine has only a very slight forward lean. The book is quite solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The pages look exceptionally clean. In scrolling through, I didn't see any conspicuous soiling. Including the frontispiece, there are eight full-page...

Spe [Signed] Prelude to Victory, an author's presentation copy inscribed in 1939, two months after the Second World War began Brigadier-General E. L. Spe 1985.18 CAD This is an inscribed author’s presentation copy of General Spears’s memoir of his role as liaison officer in 1917 during the First World War’s failed Franco-British Nivelle Offensive. The book was a successor to Spears’s Liaison, 1914 (1930). Of note, the author’s inscription is dated exactly two months after Britain and France declared war on Germany, beginning the Second World War.As prominently noted in red print on the dust jacket spine and front face, Winston Churchill contributed an introduction (pages 11-13). This first edition, first printing was inscribed to Maurice Hankey. Within months of this book’s publication and inscription, both men were playing important wartime roles under Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill. The inscription, inked in five lines on the front free endpaper recto, reads ""To Maurice Hankey from Louis Spears Nov. 3rd. 1939"". Condition approaches near fine in a good plus dust jacket. The red cloth binding is square, tight, clean, and unfaded with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. We note only trivial shelf wear to extremities and a tiny scuff to the upper edge of the front cover. The contents are clean and bright, the red-stained top edge retaining uniform hue, only the fore edges showing light soiling. Differential toning of the endpapers corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms that this copy has spent life jacketed. The dust jacket is unclipped, the original front flap price intact, and has only minor loss to the spine ends and upper front corner. The jacket is soiled, modestly spine-toned, and shows some short, closed tears and attendant wrinkling to the edges. The jacket is protected beneath a clear, removable, archival cover. In his generous introduction, Churchill observes of Spears that ""From his position as a Liaison Officer… he had the opportunity of knowing much that passed behind the lines as well as at the front."" Churchill praises Prelude to Victory as ""a military and human study of the highest value and interest."" This was not polite hyperbole. Upon finishing the book, Churchill wrote to Spears on 20 July 1939, ""I think it a great work, and one of the finest I have read in the literature of the War.""His First World War role as liaison officer between British and French high commands gave Major General Sir Edward Louis Spears (1886-1974) not only two highly regarded books, but saw him awarded the Military Cross, made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire and a Commander of the French Legion of Honor, and promoted to brigadier general. Spears served in Parliament from 1922-24 and 1931-45. In the early May 1940 crisis that saw Churchill replace Chamberlain as prime minister, Spears voted against Chamberlain. In 1940, not long after publishing and inscribing this book, now-Prime Minister Churchill sent Spears to France to report ""at first hand."" (Gilbert, VI, p.388-9) Spears not only traveled to besieged France with and for Churchill, but also rescued Charles De Gaulle;...

King later recalled: “It was like God had put me there to hear that and see those things. And by the time I went to bed that night, I had the whole book in my mind.” Collings A19. Physiography of the United States and principles of soils in relation to forestry. [FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY]. 125.18 CAD New York, thick octavo, xxii, 759 p., 292 text figures, plus 6 plates (3 colored). ***CONTENT: This classic treatise was written for foresters requiring physiographic data, but it considers many other subjects: geology, geography, geomorphology, topography, climate, drainage and soils. Part One deals with soils (physical and chemical features, water supply, temperature, humus, etc.). Part Two provides physiographic details on 25 distinct regions of the country, including the Coast Ranges, Cascades and Sierras, Great Basin, Rockies, Colorado, Texas, the Great Plains, Appalachians and Atlantic Coastal Plain, Florida, New York State, and more. A plethora of photos, maps and diagrams splendidly illustrate the text. This is a highly detailed, comprehensive work. ***CONDITION: This is a near Fine copy in the original textured olive cloth, with gilt lettering on the front cover and backstrip. Save for slight darkening to the spine and a hint of wear to the extremities, the covers are very well preserved. Lettering bright and bold. Joints and hinges solid, binding very firm. The text pages and illustrations are pristine: fresh, clean and bright. This copy is from the library of the noted Yale paleontologist Richard Swann Lull; his distinctive bookplate is on the front pastedown. An inked inscription by Lull on the half-title page notes the presentation of this volume to him from the author; a signed manuscript slip is tipped onto the title page: ""Compliments of Isaiah Bowman"". Lull and Bowman were Yale colleagues. No other ownership markings. This is a very handsome presentation copy of a scarce, important work. Nickles 123. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.

[Signed] India, an author's presentation copy of the scarce hardcover issue inscribed by Churchill the month following publication to James Craig, 1s [Signed] India, an author's presentation copy of the scarce hardcover issue inscribed by Churchill the month following publication to James Craig, 1s 6535.18 CAD This author’s presentation copy of the scarce hardcover issue of India is inscribed by Winston S. Churchill to James Craig, first Viscount Craigavon and first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, with whom Churchill had worked closely for the previous decade to establish and secure peace between northern and southern Irish states. The inscription, inked in black in five lines on the front free endpaper, reads: ""To Craigavon from Winston S. Churchill 1931. June"". This first edition, second and final impression was issued in late May, following the first printing of 27 May 1931. Hence this copy was potentially inscribed within days of publication. This is a remarkable association copy of a book almost never encountered signed, let alone inscribed, and certainly not in this, the scarcest of the first edition binding variants. It also bears the cringe-worthy evidence of previous ownership by a former mayor of Beverly Hills, California, who was clearly more narcissist than bibliophile. ConditionCondition is generally very good. The distinctive orange cloth binding is square and tight with only modest overall soiling, slight color shift to the spine, and trivial wear to extremities. The contents show only light spotting, primarily confined to the page edges, with occasional intrusions into the inner margins. What mars this remarkable association copy is its secondary and far lesser association, namely its previous ownership by Hugh W. Darling (1901-1986), a former Mayor of Beverly Hills (elected 1960) and President of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. This copy was acquired directly from the estate of Darling in the late 1980s. In a singular act of ill-advised vandalism, Darling inked ""Hugh W. Darling From H.S.D."" one inch below Churchill’s gift inscription. ""H.S.D."" is presumably Darling’s wife, Hazel, from whom Darling ostensibly received the book as a gift. Inked above and to the right of Churchill’s inscription are two dates. ""Dec. 25, 1967"" is inked in red above ""Jan 1, 1968"" in blue.Further marks within the text are, mercifully, in pencil rather than in ink. While we have left this underlining intact, it appears erasable. Underling appears in blue or red colored pencil on pages 10, 11, 23, 46, 47, 50, 60, 62, 65-68, 72, 85, 104, 112, 115, 120, 124, 126, and 138. One plausible explanation is that the 1967 and 1968 dates written in red and blue ink on the upper right of the front free endpaper denote when this underlining was done. However, we note that the underlining is in pencil while the dates are inked and that colored pencils were commercially available before this presentation copy was inscribed by Churchill for James Craig. Despite being marred by a doltish philistine of a previous owner, this remains a remarkable association copy of a book almost never seen signed, let alone inscribed. The AssociationJames Craig, (1871-1940), first Viscount Craigavon, served as first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland from 1921...

Full green morocco gilt. All edges gilt. Author inscription to flyleaf: To Mrs A. Campbell, Glendaruel, J. Gurwood, 29th July, 1842. Elizabeth Hume Campbell (d.1847), the recipient, was the only child of John Robert Hume, physician to the Duke of Wellington and Physician Extraordinary to the King. From her early youth in London she was romantically linked with the Duke of Wellington's son, Lord Duoro, and it was well known in London society that they intended to marry. Lord Grey, the prime minister, referred to Lord Duoro in a letter as engaged to ""the surgeons daughter"" and the son wrote about the ""lady who dressed better than anyone else in London"". The Duke seems to have gently put a stop to the marriage and Hume's daughter Elizabeth subsequently married Archibald Campbell of Glendaruel. There is a much later inscription to the flyleaf, dated 1912 concerning Gurwood's burial in the Tower of London, with the inscription of J. P. Dalison. This was Lieut. Col. John Pelham ('Jack') Dalison, Queen's own Royal West Kent Regiment, who had received the book from his father-in-law. Some wear and rubbing to the leather. Sunning to spine. Area of wear to the tail of the spine. Corners well rubbed. A small area of damage to the rear joint, but binding holding together well. Foxing to first and last few leaves, but generally very clean throughout. A good copy with interesting Scottish provenance, signed by the author. The recipient's grave marker is still visible at St. Sophia's Chapel in Glendaruel, Argyll.

This a presentation copy, signed on the front upper end-paper from Noel Coward; 'for Dennis Wheatley', with Wheatley's iconic bookplate to the front paste-down. Originally intended for the West End Theatre star Margaret Bannerman, Fallen Angels first opened at the Globe Theatre in London on the 21st April 1925, where it ran for 158 performances until the 29th August with Tallulah Bankhead as a last-minute substitute. Centered around the theme of two wives (who admit to premarital relations and consider adultery), there was initially some debate as to whether the play should run at all, with an official in the theatre censor Lord Chamberlain s office recommending that the licence be refused on grounds of possible scandal. With the Lord Chamberlain s approval needed prior to any public theatrical release, he acquiesced, claiming ""the whole thing is so much unreal farcical comedy, that subject to a few modifications in the dialogue it can pass."" Although Amsterdam Municipal Theatre banned the production after just a few performances in 1926, the play appeared on Broadway the following year. Coward appears to have signed a small number of other plays to Wheatley, with one or two others having appeared on the market in recent years. More images available on request.
