[Signed] Rare Copy of It Catches My Heart in Its Hands: Signed Twice by Bukowski with Two Quotations. One on Rare White Paper Stock. Includes Custom
2535.18 CAD
It Catches My Heart in Its Hands was produced by Jon and Louise Webb, founders of LouJon Press. It was printed on an old sheet-fed press and bound in their tiny apartment in New Orleans in 1963. Unlike the Bukowski chapbooks that came before, this was a true book and an incredible book at that. This incredibly beautiful book is every bit a piece of art as the poetry itself. It was hand-printed on thick paper stock of various colors, dispersed with tissues and hand-bound with a cork-lined cover. The detail, the printing methods, the craftsmanship, and the pure insanity it took to create the book was as unparalleled then and as it is today What actually makes this copy rare is the white, heavy stock page on which Bukowski has added a quotation. This page is absent in “regular” copies of the book. Instead, on the “regular” copies, Bukowski’s signature and date appears on the first blank page, which is purple. Why Jon Webb stopped sending Bukowski the white pages for signing is unknown. Perhaps he couldn’t afford the white paper stock for all copies and started sending him the purple pages to sign. On the white page on this copy, Bukowski has written: WEAK MEN ARGUE IN CROWDS; STRONG ME CRY IN THE DARK. Charles Bukowski 4-7-63 In this copy, Bukowski has also added his signature with another quotation on the purple page where just the signature and date would normally appear. This is dated 12-15-63, so Bukowski wrote this much later than the white page. At some point, the white and purple pages were inserted into the copy together: THE POETS WOULD BE MUCH WORSE THAN THEY ARE – ONLY IT DOESN’T PAY ENOUGH. This copy has the orange/red color block over the title and the turquoise lines on the cork cover, but other colors were used on these copies as well. The wrap-around jacket underneath the cork is on yellow paper (some are white). I’ve heard from more than one person that the ones with the turquoise lines are also rarer, but that’s not the case in my experience, so don’t buy a copy just for that. This copy also comes with the uncommon letterpress sheet that is a facsimile of the letter he sent to the Webbs upon receiving the first copy of the book on November 23, 1963. The sheet measures 10.5” x 8” and is folded once, with the deckled edge sticking out above the portion of the sheet paper below it. The other three pages are blank. The letterpress sheet is in Fine condition. This copy also comes with a customer Clamshell Box. In addition to publishing two Bukowski books, Jon and Louise “Gypsy Lou” Webb published four issues of The Outsider magazine, which became the standard for poetry journals at the time. No other publication attracted nearly the talent that appeared in its pages and the production value of the magazine itself was unrivaled. Bukowski appeared in all four issues, with a large collection of poems in Outsider 1 (1961) and as the named “Outside of the Year” in Outsider 3 (1963), featuring Bukowski on the cover and a large center section....

In 1980 a reporter unearthed Love's thesis and suggested Love had been involved with Roosevelt's efforts to undermine Mosaddegh in Iran. Love vehemently denied the accusation; hence the amused reference in his inscription ""would have loved. to have served under your command."" Kermit ""Kim"" Roosevelt, Jr. (1916 - 2000) was the grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt. He was a career intelligence officer who served in the Office of Strategic Services and was the mastermind of the Central Intelligence Agency's Operation Ajax, which orchestrated the coup against Iran's democratically-elected Mohammed Mossadegh administration, and returned Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran, to Iran's Peacock Throne in August 1953 for the purpose of returning Western control of Middle Eastern oil supplies. Assigned to Egypt, Roosevelt impressed his colleagues with Project FF, which encouraged the Free Officers Movement to carry out a coup d'état in 1952, and Roosevelt developed close CIA links to the new leader, Gamal Abdel Nasser. In Egypt under Allen Dulles, Kim Roosevelt supervised the CIA's operation to undermine the popular General Neguib and encourage the rise to power of Gamul Abdul Nasser. Even before his decisive victory, Nasser was communicating through Roosevelt to make a settlement with Great Britain. These back channel negotiations eventually produced the treaty signed in October 1954. Nasser ascended and for the next decade Egypt's relations with the West moved along a sometimes rocky road. By 1965 relations had significantly deteriorated and Nasser was quite worried the CIA was plotting to assassinate him. After the Odell-Amin case broke, the CIA began to look for ""more West friendly"" Egyptian elements. Their attention landed on the Muslim Brotherhood, which according to Talcott Seelye, ""We thought of Islam as a counterweight to communism. We saw it as a moderate force, and a positive one."" In fact the CIA was spending millions of dollars on anti-Nasser operations, including an extensive propaganda campaign. Hugh Wilford: ""[Roosevelt Jr.] had this notion of America forming an alliance with the Arab countries as they emerged from under the sway of...

London. Chatto and Windus. 1959. Review Copy. Loosely laid in publisher's slip dated 1959 stating book is advance review copy. Title and price handwritten in cursive. Hard Cover. Red boards with gilt titles to the spine. Boards are pristine. Text block is clean and unmarked except for some spots of foxing to the page edge. Very near fine condition. Blue unclipped dust jacket which has a little soiling to the rear panel which is white. Also a small chip. Light creasing at the spine ends and a little browning. Overall the book presents as very good. 34 black and white photographic plates, three maps and drawing of a 'fat tailed sheep'. The ancient Egyptians used to believe that the rising of the Nile was caused by the tears of Isis. So it is apt that Richard Carrington should have taken The Tears of Isis as the title of what he calls 'the story of a new journey from the mouth to the source of the River Nile'. Richard Carrington recreates with skill, humour and enthusiasm the character of the great river in its infinite variety of atmosphere and mood, and traces its influence over the people who pass their lives within sight of its water. The American reader, moved by the beauty of Janet Frame's vision, which is nothing less than poetry, cannot fail to be impressed by Miss Frame's talent. Surely it is the mark of an extraordinary gift ""to find heaven in a grain of sand"", to confront, as Miss Frame does, the harshest and most meager of realities with so much understanding and compassion. ***For Francie, Daphne, Toby and Chicks, the four children of a poverty-haunted family in southern New Zealand, the source of the world's treasure - of all illusion and promise - is the rubbish dump on the edge of town. How this charmed and malignant place ensnares and dooms them, each in turn, is the theme of this remarkable novel. The story charts the fate, the inner odyssey as well as the outer, of each of the children. In the end, the seemingly most hopelessly lost of the four is able to find a place in the real world, while the others sink under the spell that binds them. Here is the eternal legend of dream and betrayal, but conceived with so individual a vision that it defies conventional literary comparisons. With uncanny precision, Miss Frame exposes the mysterious subterranean currents which link brother to sister, new generations to old, and ultimately, the essential child to the adult in each of us. And girdling the story, like the seas lapping that island continent, is the New Zealand setting, the sharp contrasts of climate and landscape, beauty and...

2035.18 CAD
Gustav Hasford, The Phantom Blooper. New York: Bantam, 1990. First edition and first printing. Signed and inscribed review copy sent out by Hasford himself after his publisher declined to do so themselves. Included is the infamous funeral notice letter Hasford included with his review copies, an original with author signature! Octavo, publisher s heather boards with black cloth binding and silver details on the spine. Original publisher s dust jacket with price intact. Hasford s second novel following, The Short Timers, which was adapted to film by Stanley Kubrick as, Full Metal Jacket. This second novel never got the publicity that it deserved, but those that read it agree that it is a fantastic novel. Both the short timers, and this novel, its sequel were based partly on Hasford s own experiences. This copy with this very scare letter is a real treasure. The letter is signed and the book is signed twice. A piece of history really for this author who went a bit unhinged due to issues with substances as well as likely mental instability.

Illustrated. 314 pages. Murdoch was a co-founder of the Golf Collector's Society, owned a massive golf library and wrote this book, the first modern golf bibliography. Much more than just a listing, he explores the history of golf and golf literature, the authors, the collectors, the scarce and the common books, including early obscure books with perhaps only brief mentions of the game. Many of the listings have biographies of the authors and/or comments on the title listed. For example, Bernard Darwin's listing uses five pages for two dozen books. What also makes the volume useful as a reference tool is that the Bibliography is followed by a Chronological Listing of the same books, then an Alphabetical Listing of same, and finally a listing by Subject Matter of same. One of the most enjoyable and informative books in the library of golf and a must for all serious golf book collectors in any genre.
