Octavo., Publisher's original grey cloth, 150pp., A beautiful copy which shows light toning in the text and no previous signs of ownership. A First edition of this collection of four lectures given by Besant on self-purification, thought control, and spiritual advancement. Besant (1847 - 1933) was a British socialist, theosophist, freemason, women's rights and Home Rule activist, educationist and campaigner for Indian nationalism. In 1890 Besant met Helena Blavatsky, and over the next few years her interest in theosophy grew, whilst her interest in secular matters waned. She became a member of the Theosophical Society and a prominent lecturer on the subject. As part of her theosophy-related work, she travelled to India. In 1898 she helped establish the Central Hindu School, and in 1922 she helped establish the Hyderabad (Sind) National Collegiate Board in Bombay (today's Mumbai), India. The Theosophical Society Auditorium in Hyderabad, Sindh (Sindh) is called Besant Hall in her honor. In 1902, she established the first overseas Lodge of the International Order of Co-Freemasonry, Le Droit Humain. Over the next few years, she established lodges in many parts of the British Empire. In 1907 she became president of the Theosophical Society, whose international headquarters were, by then, located in Adyar, Madras, (Chennai).

ANB, Ignas K. Skrupskelis, ""James, William, (11 January 1842–26 August 1910)"". McDermott 840. This work is the culmination of James' interest in abnormal psychology. These lectures initiated the psychological analysis of religion, and would go on to become his most popular publication. James made a point to examine individual experiences of religious people, rather than the general creeds and theologies of various religions when studying this topic. According to James, religion was generally a feeling that the world around us, the one observable to our senses, is related to one that is not observable by our senses. This unobservable phenomenon is what saves and regenerates the physical world around us, according to his theory. The first British edition and true first of the work. Moderate rubbing to the boards and a small split to the rear joint's cloth, contemporary name on the free front endpaper.

A rare first edition beautifully rebound. An account of the 1820 Settlers in Albany South Africa by one of the emigrants and one of the few survivors in 1870. Mendelssohn I, 491. ""When the Jubilee of the British Settlers was celebrated in Grahamstown in 1870, the Rev Henry Hare Dugmore was chosen to tell the story of the Settlement, and the lecture he gave was later published . . . Dugmore had come as a child with the emigrants of 1820, and had shared fully in both the hardships and the achievement of the critical fifty years that followed . . . He was chosen to speak to them, because he had earned the right to speak for them."" Henry Hare Dugmore (1810 1896) was an English missionary, writer and translator. He was born in England to Isaac and Maria Dugmore and baptised in Birmingham on 5 June 1810. The family emigrated when his father was financially ruined after being forced to pay the debts of a relative for whom he had stood surety. The Dugmore family sailed to South Africa on the vessel Sir George Osborn in 1820 as part of the Gardner party of 1820 Settlers. In 1830 Dugmore became a committed member of the Wesleyan Methodist church, and began to study for ordination. In the late 1830s he was appointed as the successor to the missionary William Boyce, who ran a Wesleyan mission station in the rural Eastern Cape at Mount Coke, near King William's Town. Dugmore became fluent in the Xhosa language, and spent the next twenty years undertaking missionary work. He was jointly responsible for the first translation of the Bible into the Xhosa language, and composed a large number of Xhosa hymns, some of which are still sung today. In 1860, Dugmore moved to the town of Queenstown where he spent the rest of his life. He continued to write and became involved in a large number of clubs and societies. In addition, he became the focus of many visits by missionaries from Europe and North America, and he was noted for his oratory and public speaking on sacred and secular subjects in both English and Xhosa.

Elements of Chemistry, in the order of the lectures given at Yale College SILLIMAN, Benjamin [Very Good] [Hardcover]
485.18 CAD
Benjamin Silliman, Sr. (1779-1864), a pioneering and highly influential early American educator and scientist, was also a venerable professor of chemistry and geology at Yale College, and founder of the American Journal of Science. This massive treatise, (the largest American chemistry textbook of its time), is arguably Silliman's most important scientific work. ""Elements"" provided a detailed, up-to-date synopsis of the subject that compared favorably with European textbooks of that day (DSB). This treatise presents an amalgam of topics in physics (light, heat, electricity, galvanism, etc.), mineralogy (crystallization, analyses of minerals and mineral waters), materia medica, pharmacy and the chemistry of plant and animal substances, as well as covering traditional topics in chemistry (metals, nonmetals, compounds, etc.). In a memorian to Professor Silliman presented at the National Academy of Sciences it was said: ""In 1830 he published an elaborate treatise on General Chemistry, in two volumes, octavo, entitled ""Elements of Chemistry, in the order of the Lectures given in Yale College."" It lays no claim to originality in the treatment of the subject. From the results of his own laboratory, and from his much reading, he gathered up all the known facts and laws of the science, and embodied them in a form which he deemed most convenient for instruction. His object, as expressed in his own language, was ""to unite copiousness with condensation, perspicuity with brevity, and a lucid order and due connection of subordinate parts with a general unity of design."" BOOK DETAILS AND CONDITION: 2 Volumes, 8vo, First Edition (Second Issue); new boards, new brown cloth spine with paper labels. I: 2 blanks (1 detached), xii, 518 pp, 2 blanks; II: 2 blanks, viii, 696, 3 plates, 48, 12 pp. See Neville II pp 476-7. The first issue did not include the 3 plates following p 696. Overall VG. FOOTNOTE: The Silliman Memorial lectures series has been published by Yale University since 1901. The lectures were established by the university on the foundation of a bequest of $80,000, left in 1883 by Augustus Ely Silliman, in memory of his mother, Mrs. Hepsa Ely Silliman. Hepsa Ely was the daughter of the Reverend David Ely, a member of the Yale College Class of 1769. She was married to Gold Selleck Silliman, brother of Professor Benjamin Silliman and a 1796 graduate of Yale College. She was the mother of two sons, August Ely Silliman and Benjamin Douglas Silliman. Benjamin graduated from Yale College in 1824.
