One of 250 signed copies, large octavo size, 59 pp., signed by both Coppard and Gibbings. The Golden Cockerel Press came together in autumn of 1920, at a time when post-World War I society was ushering in a renaissance of creative minds, including another renaissance of the printing press as the artist's tool similar to that of William Morris and the arts and crafts printers of the previous century. The press worked with many notable artists including Eric Gill, Blair Hughes-Stanton, and the artist for this work, Robert Gibbings - who was also the owner of the Press at this point. Alfred Edgar Coppard (1878-1957) was an aspiring author when The Golden Cockerel Press published one of his prior works, ""Adam & Eve & Pinch Me"" in 1921; it was met with critical success which launched Coppard's career as a writer. This humourous little book is a compendium of how to play Rummy along with (or while?) exploring parts of Ireland, embellished with wood engravings by both Coppard and Gibbings, often taking jabs at each other in the captions.even one of the final pages of text (""Index"") has boldly printed in red ink at the bottom the notation: ""Postscript: For Coppard read throughout Prevaricator. - R.G."". ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter bound in green morocco with patterned cloth over boards, title in gilt on the spine, illustrated title page with the word ""Rummy"" in red, the signatures of Coppard and Gibbings on dedication page (""To the finest hotel in the world, Cronin's of Gougane Barra"" - which, incidentally, is still in existence), fifteen engravings both in-text and half-page throughout, vintage bookseller ticket on the rear pastedown; Caslon O.F. type on Batchelor paper, large octavo size (9 5/8"" by 6 3/8""), pagination: [i-iv] 1-[53] [1, blank] [1, colophon]; signed limited edition of 250 copies, this no. 39 (there were also 1000 unsigned trade editions). ___CONDITION: Better than very good, the leather shelfback smooth and supple, the boards clean, straight corners with minimal rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; the spine sunned to brown, a small area of residue on the front pastedown likely from an old Ex-Libris, minor toning and a few light spots on the endpapers. ___CITATION: Chanticleer, no. 86. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Previous owner's name (James Williams) written in ink on front free endpaper. Faded notes and a rough sketch on rear endpapers. Free of marginalia within text block. This work is complete with all 28 woodcut maps, including navigation charts of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers (13 each), plus a map of Pittsburgh and one of the Falls of Ohio. (Thomson 282) (Howes C855) (Sabin 17385) A very nice example of this important guide used for travel along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers in the early nineteenth century. ""At the beginning of the 19th century, the waterways of the trans-Appalachian West were important transportation routes for emigrants, traders, and travelers. Flatboats, keelboats, and eventually steamboats carried goods and people to various destinations along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers as well as their tributaries. River guides became standard purchases for those who traveled the western waters. One of the earliest and best-known river guides was compiled by Zadok Cramer."" (""American River Guides from 1800 to 1860,"" AB Bookman's Weekly, July 27, 1998, p. 125) Cramer died in 1813, two years after the publication of the 7th edition of The Navigator. His wife, and eventually his daughter, took his place in the printing business, and five additional guides were published between 1814 and 1824.

With an engraved folding map ""Sketch of the Western Countries of Canada 1791."" Collated complete against Howes. Bound in modern quarter morocco over marbled bards. On the spine, five raised bands. Title gilt to red sheep in the second panel. Some rubbing and bumps to the extremities of the boards. A light crease to the lower fore-corner of the text-block, not affecting the text. Some offsetting to the map. A good clean copy with excellent margins (e.g., S1 fore-deckle preserved) of 50-65mm. The author is unknown outside the autobiographical details he offers within the Voyages and Travels. The order of his descriptors -- Indian Interpreter first, then Trader -- is circumstantial. He came to Montreal in 1768 as a clerk, and in the course of his mercantile duties he came to converse well in the languages of those people with whom he traded. Ojibwa was the common tongue for fur-traders, but Long went further, embedding himself -- he describes an ""adoption"" by the Ojibwa chief Madjeckewiss (Mudjekeewis, a spirit) -- and learning about their culture. The American Revolution interrupted trade along what is now the U.S.-Canadian border, and Long writes of travels through Wisconsin, Quebec and Ontario, largely aiming to skirt armed conflict in favor of continued trade. He remained in North America through the late 1780's, his fortunes having declined somewhat, and sold his story in London, publishing this first edition in 1791. As a first-hand account it falls within an established genre from the period. Where the work stands out is its lengthy vocabularies at the end, including Esquimeaux (the Eskimo-Aleut language family) Iroquois (the Iroquoian family), Algonkin (the Algonquian family), Chippeway (Ojibwa), Mohegan (Mohegan-Pequot, part of the Algonquian family) and Shawanee (Shawnee, also Algonquian). The map extends to the west of Ontario and modern Minnesota and north to James Bay, and is thought to be the work of Long himself; it is an important map of the Great Lakes region. A lot of anecdotes of Borrow's encounter with this people are to be found in this book, which shows that he spoke the Romani language fluently and was even considered as one of them. In contrast to most modern works about the Romani people also the dark side of the Romani culture is discussed, like fraud and robbery, which were apparently common with the Romani people in the author's lifetime. Nevertheless, George Borrow respected them highly and also mentioned the long history of their persecution in Europe and elsewhere.

In the decades after American independence, the United Kingdom concentrated on the profitable management and settlement of Canada. The Canadas -- Upper and Lower (Quebec) -- stretched from the Great Lakes to the coast of Labrador (western territories would come only in the 1860's), and comprised territory rich in fur, timber and fish. George Heriot (1766-1844) was postmaster-general of the Canadas (that is, deputy postmaster general of the United Kingdom, responsible for the Canadas), and had traveled previously in the West Indies; he was, to boot, a self-taught artist of considerable accomplishment. The plates are all after Heriot's own watercolors. These experiences and abilities combined to produce two books, the 1804 History of Canada and the present work, celebrated by Hill as ""the earliest and most important aquatint book published on Canada."" The work was issued with uncolored as well as colored plates, as here; the latter is a traditional sought-after Canadianum. The text expresses the sociological attitudes of the day; the second part explores the customs of Native Americans right through North and South Americas, and is followed by Rasles's vocabulary of the Algonquin languages Norman Bobins began his vast collection of color-plate books in the early 1980's -- many having been purchased at Arader -- and began to disburse them in a series of landmark sales at Christie's. Goodwin, at the Queen's Head against St. Dunstan's Church, Fleet-Street, 1711. First edition in English. Robert Molesworth, First Viscount Molesworth (1656-1725) was an Anglo-Irish politician and ardent Whig writer whose An Account of Denmark as it was in the Year 1692 (first published in 1694) became famous among the American revolutionists for its demonstration that the liberty of a people is dependent upon their vigilance in preserving it. Molesworth's tract on Denmark represented an early form of comparative political analysis at a time when political science was just emerging as a discipline. Molesworth, an ardent British Whig, served as the British ambassador to the Court of Denmark from 1689 to 1692, during which time he composed his fervent attack on the Danish absolutism initiated by Danish King Frederick III. His objective was to show how the subversion of constitutional liberties rendered an otherwise free government despotic, and he used his experience in Denmark as a case study. Molesworth argued that the absolutist corruption he observed in Denmark poisoned the commonwealth just as a disease sickens the body, and that by diagnosing and comparing the symptoms, a people may properly treat and avoid the harmful results. In furtherance of his analysis, Molesworth would later publish (in 1711) an English translation of Francis Hotoman's Franco-Gallia (originally published in Latin in 1574), which traced the loss of liberties in France as a result of the crown's usurpation of power. Both works therefore warned against incremental encroachments upon liberty and authority. Similarly, the British diplomat and Swedish envoy John Robinson (1650-1723) wrote his An Account of Sueden Together with an Extract of the History of that Kingdom to challenge the subjugation of the Swedish peoples by their king and the confiscation of their property through the use of force, bribery, and coercion. Robinson's Account of Sueden was first published by Timothy Goodwin in 1694 shortly after the publication of the third edition of Molesworth's Account of Denmark, and Goodwin published the tract anonymously and without Robinson's authorization. Goodwin defended his publication by emphasizing in his introduction that since ""several copies of it were got abroad, I considered it might at last chance to come forth in Print less Correct than at present I undertake to give it to the World, whom I pretend to oblige by a very Accurate Edition."" Goodwin concludes by expressing his hopes that the author (Robinson) ""will not be offended at this Undertaking, since 'tis likely 'twould have been published by others, not so well to his...

3535.18 CAD
The first American edition of Montesquieu's (1689-1755) classic work of political theory that helped form the American Constitution. Montesquieu first published The Spirit of Laws in 1748 in his native France (as De l'esprit des loix) anonymously, in part because his works were subject to censorship. The book became recognized for its pioneering work on political theory and comparative law, and was rapidly translated into other languages and published throughout Europe. Thomas Nugent, the influential Irish historian and travel writer, published the first English translation in 1750, but in 1751 the Roman Catholic Church placed the work on its Index Librorum Prohibitorum (""List of Prohibited Books""). Despite the book's censorship, it would profoundly influence the American Founding Fathers and other political luminaries, including Alexis de Tocqueville. The book was first printed in America by the influential revolutionary war printer and anti-British journalist Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831), and was sold and distributed by Thomas and fellow American printer and economist, Mathew Carey (1760-1839). Montesquieu spent nearly twenty-one years researching and writing The Spirit of Laws, which covers a wide range of topics, including law, philosophy, government, social life, and anthropology. Montesquieu's work is perhaps best remembered today for its influential thesis that the best means for promoting and safeguarding political liberty is through a constitutional government that is subject to a separation of powers-an insight that would directly shape the formation of the American constitutional republic. The work also famously argues that successful political institutions must reflect the social and geographical aspects of the communities they govern, and that legitimate governments are those that preserve legality and individual civil liberties. This edition was the first to be printed in the newly born United States of America and sets forth Montesquieu's enduring thought in thirty-one books that are divided into six sections. A masterpiece of political theory and sociology and a defining part of American history. Two volumes bound as one. Contemporary calf. Re-backed, new endpapers, hole in upper margin of title and adjacent leaves, tear on final leaf affecting a few letters, browning and offsetting to pages. Enclosed in an open-end case of brown cloth with leather tips.

Demy 4to (252 x 191mm): [2],vi,124; 222; [2,blank],8,210pp, with 27 full-page and five half-page plates of monuments and tombs (including four folding) and three woodcut headpieces (one signed 'FH'), three woodcut tailpieces (one signed 'FH'), and three woodcut factotums. Some words and inscriptions in black letter. ""An Account of the Bishops of Worcester"" and ""Chartæ originales ex registris sedis episcopalis Wygorn"" (including Index, which references the whole work) with separate title pages, pagination, and register. Engraved Chippendale armorial book plate of George Kenyon of Peel Esq. Contemporary full calf, spine richly gilt in six compartments separated by raised bands, burgundy morocco lettering piece gilt. Occasional neat, informative marginalia in light pencil, several quires lightly toned, skillful professional repairs to joints and head cap, but a fresh, bright example. Comports completely with Upcott's description of 1736 first edition (excepting canceled title leaf) and is thus the same edition (probably reissued to correct the year up to which the Account of the Bishops is taken: erroneously given as 1660 on 1736 title page). Upcott III, pp. 1342-44. Lowndes 2667. The engraved Chippendale armorial book plate book belonged to one of several eighteenth-century George Kenyons of Peel Hall, a large timber, stone and brick house built in the late sixteenth century. with the title Lord Kenyon. Perhaps the second Baron Kenyon (1776-1855), but more likely, given the florid rococo style of the book plate, a style in sharp decline after 1770, the first. N. B. ""Ida Freund (5 April 1863 - 15 May 1914) was the first woman to be a university chemistry lecturer in the United Kingdom. She is known for her influence on science teaching, particularly the teaching of women and girls. She wrote two key chemistry textbooks and invented the idea of baking periodic table cupcakes, as well as inventing a gas measuring tube, which was named after her.Freund is known for her interest in science education, and in particular for improving science teaching in girls' schools. At the time, in Cambridge, women could not work in the same laboratories as men so Freund taught special classes in the Chemistry labs at Newnham College. She also wrote textbooks and organised holiday workshops for women teachers. Freund experimented with different teaching techniques, favouring Wilhelm Ostwald's approach, in which ""[t]he main facts of chemistry are dealt with in the form of a dialogue between a teacher and a pupil"". She insisted that her students read original research and test the validity of published work - a revolutionary approach for the time, for which she was criticised. However, she had a significant influence on the teaching techniques of the time and was much loved by her students. Hutchinson and Thomas, the editors of her posthumously published textbook The Fundamental Principles of Chemistry, described her teaching ethos thus ""Miss Freund had a dread of thoughtless experimenting and slipshod thinking. She felt strongly that much that passes for training in science has little relation to scientific method and is of small educational value."" They quote her as saying, "" I aimed at giving by means of class teaching not only a common ground of knowledge but also a common standard concerning the nature of scientific proof and the meaning of real accuracy"". She opposed the introduction of domestic science teaching in girls' schools as a substitute for fundamental scientific education but made use of her own baking and culinary skills to create engaging teaching resources. Many have praised Boswell for his reconstruction of the larger-than-life character of Samuel Johnson. Johnson's personality shines through the letters and journal entries included in these volumes. Samuel Johnson of course is best-remembered for his revised English Dictionary, done after Nathan Bailey's first pass at an English-language dictionary. Johnson's dictionary stands out as one of wit, full of pithy entries, reflective of his life experience and skilfull command of the English language. A handsome set of Boswell's story of Samuel Johnson, a work that has been celebrated throughout the ages as a turning-point in biography, remembrance, and as a revolution in the characterization of a historical person. Recently and sympathetically rebacked, a few corners subtly renewed. Each title page and the final plate has a neat and tidy repair.

Azure tissue-guards present but sometimes creased and foxed. Pink armorial bookplate of Robert Ramsay to the front paste-down. Captain Basil Hall (1788-1844) traversed the world with the Royal Navy, first aboard HMS Endymion in the Napoleonic Wars (Napoleon was a friend of his father's, and he used the connection to land an interview with the First Consul on his way back from the East) and eventually to South Africa and on to China, Japan and Korea aboard the Lyra and the Alceste on Lord Amherst's embassy. The present work, the first edition of that journey, is one of the first Western accounts of Korea. In the late 1820's he traveled through the United States with his wife. From 1831 he published nine volumes of Fragments of Voyages and Travels, which cemented his place in the public imagination. The ""Loo-Choo Island"" to which he refers is modern Okinawa -- part of the Ryukyu Archipelago that stretches southwest from Japan toward Taiwan. Once the capital of the Ryukyuan people, the native culture (and language) were suppressed by Japan in the Meiji era, making the present work not only one of the earliest accounts in the West but an important record of a largely-vanished culture. William Havell (1782-1857) -- brother of Robert Havell Sr., whom Audubon approached to make the aquatint-engraved plates of the Birds of America (his son, Robert Jr., would carry out the work) -- accompanied Hall on his travels and so drew the subjects from life and could oversee their coloration. Inasmuch as Japan itself was closed to foreigners and Korea still largely unknown, the plates offered the first accurate glimpses to Westerners of two major cultures of the Pacific. The owner who placed his bookplate is a difficult figure to pin down. Perhaps it Rear Admiral Robert Ramsay (1773-1854), the Scottish sailor who commanded HMS Mistletoe, which sailed to Buenos Aires in time to evacuate the Brazilian Viceroy when the May Revolution broke out in 1810. Ramsay then commanded HMS Regulus in the War of 1812, fighting in the Chesapeake Campaign. Given their ages and time in the Navy, perhaps Ramsay and Hall even knew one another.
