[First Edition] A Christmas Carol In Prose Being A Ghost Story of Christmas. DICKENS, Charles [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover]
9785.18 CAD
FIRST EDITION SECOND ISSUE. 1 vol., 6-5/8" x 4-7/16", chapter heading reading "Stave One", illustrated with 4 hand colored engraved plates by John Leech and 4 black and white illustrations by W.J. Linton, internally clean and bright, mild offsetting to color plates. Bound in the original straight grained rose colored cloth, gilt tile and wreath to spine and front cover, front cover has a perfect 'D' in 'Dickens', yellow pastedowns and endpapers, all edges gilt, front hinge expertly repaired, head of spine renewed, general handling, uneven stain to rear cover, overall still a GOOD+ copy. Regarded as Dicken's most widely read novel and considered to be "the greatest Christmas book ever written in any language" (Eckel p. 116) selling more than 6000 copies in the few days leading up to Christmas. The work was extravagantly costly as Dickens for the first time (and incidentally his last) used color in the title-page and etchings as he wanted to make the book a beautiful gift and to be a celebration of the Christmas spirit. After the initial success, Dickens continued the series throughout the 1840's, maintaining "the Carol" philosophy to "strike a sledgehammer blow" for the poor, uneducated, and repressed.

[First Edition] The Flight of the Falcon - Daphne du Maurier - First Edition - 1965 - Doubleday - DJ - Inscribed Daphne du Maurier [Used - Very good]
70.18 CAD
The First Edition of Daphne du Maurier's "The Flight of the Falcon" states "First Edition in the United States of America" on the copyright page. Published by Doubleday & Company, Garden City, New York, 1965. By 1965, Daphne du Maurier needed no introduction. Rebecca had made her one of the most famous novelists in the English-speaking world, and The Flight of the Falcon was marketed in exactly those terms, "In the great tradition of Rebecca, My Cousin Rachel, and The Scapegoat, a new masterpiece of haunting atmosphere and hypnotic suspense." This is a du Maurier novel of obsession and identity: a young Italian courier becomes entangled in a murder in Rome, a woman who inexplicably stirs his memory. His search for her identity leads him back to Ruffano, the hill town he fled as a boy during the retreating German army's final days in Italy. It's a town haunted by a 500-year-old legend of cruelty, and by something far more immediate and personal. The atmosphere is pure du Maurier: beautiful, unsettling, and suffused with the Gothic dread she perfected across four decades. This copy carries a lovely Christmas inscription: "Dear Grandy, We hope you enjoy this book, and have a very Merry Christmas. Love Always, Robyn & Mike," dated December 25, 1965, gifted the same year of publication. First Edition in the United States of America. Copyright © 1965 by Daphne du Maurier. Published by Doubleday & Company, Inc., Garden City, New York. LC Card 65-10613. 301 pages. Jacket by Casey Lubin. Serialized in Good Housekeeping Magazine. Book is in Very Good condition, with deep rust/orange cloth boards over green cloth, binding tight and square throughout, pages toned throughout with age (as expected for a 60-year-old copy), otherwise clean and unmarked except for the Christmas inscription on the FFEP. Dust jacket is Good with warm ochre/gold tones with Italian cityscape illustration, original price ($4.95) unclipped on front flap, significant chipping and splitting at spine crown, toning and soiling to rear panel, otherwise design intact and colors present. Protected in mylar. Condition: Very Good / Good DJ A genuine first edition of a du Maurier Gothic thriller, given as a Christmas gift the year it was published.

Korngold went to Hollywood in 1934 to adapt Mendelssohn's music for *A Midsummer Night's Dream*, and returned to score Michael Curtiz's *The Adventures of Robin Hood* (1938). Fortuitously, he arrived back in Hollywood just before the Nazis annexed Austria, and, being Jewish, decided to stay in America, where he spent the rest of his life. Korngold won an Academy Award for *Robin Hood* and it was the first of several films scored by him, directed by Curtiz, and starring Errol Flynn, including *The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex* (1939) and *The Sea Hawk* (1940). After WWII he returned to classical composition, though today he is generally considered, along with Max Steiner, the father of film music.
[Signed] [First Edition] IN COLD BLOOD; A True Account of a Multiple Murder and its Consequences Capote, Truman [Used - Near fine] [Hardcover]
4085.18 CAD
ASSOCIATION COPY; SIGNED by the Author on a special tipped-in leaf after the front free endpaper, 8vo, reddish-brown cloth with gold title on spine & "T.C." on front cover; archival mylar-protected pictorial dust jacket ($5.95, unclipped, 1st state); reddish-brown endpapers; black topstain; [xii], 343 pages + [1] About the Author. Most importantly, this copy comes with a deeply personal UNPUBLISHED, 8-page (roughly 3,600-word) memoir SIGNED by Mrs. Sarah Beyne née Dale; then, a girlish eye-and-ear witness to "Consequences" of the In Cold Blood murders. A personalized Krochs & Brentano's "First Edition Circle" page-marker has been Signed & Inscribed by Mrs. Sarah Dale Beyne and laid into the book. Remarkable ASSOCIATION COPY of the First Edition of Truman Capote's SIGNED "true crime" masterpiece in NF/VG Condition. This superior Signed family copy of In Cold Blood--belonging to Mrs. Sarah Dale Beyne--is accompanied by her 8-page unpublished memoir. It details her family's close relationship with the Herb Clutter family who had been massacred in 1959; her veterinary father and family's shocked reactions to the deaths of their very close friends; the gristly clean-up involving her father.; Thereafter, Sarah's narrative recounts the dramatic confrontation that Truman Capote precipitated when his chauffeur drove him into the Dale veterinary clinic-&-home complex in search of fresh tidbits about the murdered family. Instead, Capote found Sarah's normally kindly father was filled with righteous wrath as yet another "Consequence" of Capote's predatory search for morbid details. As Dr. Dale's wife and children (including 11-year old Sarah) watched anxiously from their home's windows--their burly father cursed and ejected Truman Capote from their property. Notwithstanding occasional repulses, upon publication, Capote's novel received several plaudits: notably, The New York Time's reviewer called it a "Masterpiece." On the other hand and echoing sentiments like those described by Sarah, prominent author Tom Wolfe was more critical of Capote's authorial propensities in an essay entitled "Pornoviolence." Because "In Cold Blood" was pathfinding as a major work of creative nonfiction--or the "non-fiction novel" as Truman called it--in 1966, the Mystery Writers of America honored In Cold Blood and Capote with their prestigious Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Fact Crime book. It was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, though didn't win. Overall, the book has become a classic and foundation of the modern true crime genre, as it helped redefine narrative journalism and earn Capote international acclaim. What elevates this copy beyond normal collectibility is its remarkable associations. Sarah's insider's perspective on the aftermath of the tragedy is a powerful testament to the human costs attending the creation of one of America's most celebrated works of literature. Condition: The book itself is in Superior condition: The cloth is tight, clean and bright; the...
