Producer: Brian Carter Cellars Vintage: 2010 Size: 375ml ABV: 19% Varietal: Touriga Nacional Country/Region: United States, Yakima Valley Producer Information Of all the decisions a winemaker has to make – from grapes to barrels to yeast and equipment – the vineyards chosen for their wines is easily the most important. The site where the grapes are grown is the most critical piece of a wine’s quality, followed by the way the grapes are grown. Therefore, when Brian decides to source grapes from a particular vineyard, the effect on the final wine is doubly important, since it always involves a site as well as a grower/manager.Listed below are the eleven most important vineyards and growers from which Brian Carter Cellars currently sources grapes. In addition to the AVA (American Viticultural Area), the varieties sourced, and a brief description of the style of wines produced from each site, we have listed the year that the vineyard was first planted, and the year Brian first started to source from that vineyard (often dating back before the beginning of Brian Carter Cellars). Totaling the years these eleven vineyards have been in existence – over 300 years – gives us some idea of the cumulative experience these growers have managing their sites.

Producer: Panther Creek Cellars Ratings: WA 90 Vintage: 2004 Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Pinot Noir Country/Region: United States, Willamette Valley Perfumed layers of super-ripe cherries, plums, and violets with just a touch of spicy oak. Reviews: Wine Advocate: This wine confounded me. I fell in love with its medium-to-dark ruby-colored aromatics at the winery. It revealed perfumed layers of super-ripe cherries, plums, and violets with just a touch of spicy oak. On the palate its seductive personality offered chewy-textured, mouth-coating, and concentrated waves of gorgeously sweet red and black fruits. Revisited three times since, it twice smelled of spicy apple cider, was completely disjointed, and had a hard tannic finish. Producer Information Located in the heart of the Willamette Valley, Panther Creek Cellars has been producing signature Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay wines since 1986. The winery has been recognized for its signature blends as well as single vineyard designate wines. “Panther Creek has a storied history and I’m eager to build on that legacy,” says Tony Rynders, winemaker. “I have been making wine in Oregon for almost 20 years, and I look forward to beginning this chapter with one of Oregon’s most established Pinot Noir producers, founded by one of the wine industry’s great heroes, Ken Wright.” Our goal, in making Panther Creek wine, is simple: We hope that each wine will express the personality of its vintage and character of its vineyard. This expressiveness is the essence of great Oregon Pinot Noir. Our wines are crafted to complement a variety of foods, as well as be enjoyed on their own. We believe that great Pinot Noir can be enjoyed as a young, fresh wine that showcases ripe, sweet fruit, as well as an older, mature wine that features unparalleled complexity and beauty.

Producer Information Hook Or Crook Cellars is owned and operated by Thomas Allen Wine Estates, a quiet winery in Lodi, California, that has people talking. And we like it that way. We’re not looking for the spotlight. We’re too busy doing what others said couldn’t be done. We’ve been in the wine business for the past two decades, although our training dates back to the 1970s as kids in New Jersey, learning from multiple generations on both sides of our families. Some were hobby wine makers. Others ran a local deli. All were hard working Italians who worked hard for every dollar earned. Decades later, my wife Tiana and I began our own venture into the world of wine, buying beautiful land in Lodi, and moving our family of five to the California Central Valley. Today, in addition to wine production of Hook Or Crook Cellars, Thomas Allen Wine Estates produces more than a million cases annually for other well-known, national brands. Pretty sure, we’re making all the grandparents proud. And that’s a humbling feeling.

Smooth and supple in texture, a graceful, elegant style that slowly unfolds to reveal a deep core of earthy currant, olive, cherry, coffee and tobacco flavors. Intensity builds on the long, complex finish. Producer Information Stag's Leap Wine Cellars was founded in the early 1970s by the Winiarski family on land that would eventually become part of the Stags Leap AVA in Napa Valley, California. The Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend had its first vintage in 1972, and rose to rapid fame in 1976 when it beat out the likes of Mouton-Rothschild and Haut-Brion at the blind Judgement of Paris tasting that is widely credited with putting California's wine industry on the map. The estate consists of two adjoining vineyards in Napa: the Stag's Leap Vineyard (SLV) and the Fay vineyard in the Stags Leap AVA planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as a small portion of Petit Verdot. The SLV vineyard has volcanic soils and contributes spice and concentration to its grapes, whereas the Fay vineyard is predominantly alluvial and gives a more aromatic character. Stag's Leap's top wine is the Cask 23, a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon from the Stag's Leap Vineyard. This wine came about as the 1974 Stag's Leap Cabernet was being blended from different barrels. The winemaker came across a barrel so exceptional that it could not be placed into the blend. Instead, he bottled it on its own and named it Cask 23. Stag's Leap's other premium wines include the single vineyard expressions of SLV and Fay. Stag's Leap Wine Cellar is not to be confused with the nearby producer, Stags' Leap Winery. The two came to legal blows in the 1980s over the Stag's Leap title, but an agreement was reached over the careful placement of the apostrophe. Later, they would team up to fight the proposed Stags Leap District AVA, although that was also settled with the complete omission of the apostrophe from the appellation's name. In 2007, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, including the winery and the SLV and Fay vineyards, was...

The mouth feel is crisp and clean with racy acidity, lively fruit and a hint of minerality on the finish. Producer Information In 2009, 90+ Cellars founder Kevin Mehra set out on a mission to make the world's best wines more affordable and accessible to all. His idea was built on the understanding that many wineries around the globe -- even the most highly-acclaimed ones -- consistently produce more wine than they can sell under their own top labels. This was especially true at the time due to the economic recession. Kevin brought on Wine Director Brett Vankoski, and together they started to seek out wineries that had a history of high (90+ point) ratings. They gave these wineries the opportunity to sell more wine, while in turn, giving wine lovers access to these acclaimed wines at better prices. The only caveat was that 90+ Cellars couldn't divulge the names of the wineries and vineyards. The concept worked, and our label started to take off. Over the years, we have developed relationships with hundreds of amazing wineries all over the world. These partnerships allow us to offer a highly selective, global collection of wines we know you'll love; from everyday classics to more premium selections. And we never stop searching for new wines, always striving to make it easy for people to explore, discover and fall in love with great wine.

Producer: Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Vintage: 1979 Size: 1.5L ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon Country/Region: United States, California There is a wonderful interplay here between a certain austerity in the structure and the vibrancy of the layered flavors. This creates palate interest, which continues to the completion of the long resonant finish. In 2007, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, including the winery and the SLV and Fay vineyards, was sold for $185 million to Washington's Ste. Michelle Estate and Tuscan producer Marchesi Antinori.

Producer: De Toren Private Cellar Vintage: NV Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Red Blend Country/Region: South Africa, Western Cape This red blend is full of fresh, luscious red strawberries and hints of cinnamon. The De Toren Delicate Red Blend is fresh, lightly styled and best expresses its exquisite nature when served slightly chilled. Producer Information De Toren Private Cellar is an estate situated in one of South Africa's most famous winemaking regions, Stellenbosch. It was founded by Emil and Sonette den Dulk in the early 1990s with a view to producing Bordeaux-style blends from South African soils. The estate consists of 22 hectares (54 acres) of hillside vineyards. Here, the vines have an excellent, sun-exposed aspect that, when combined with cooling southeastern winds, makes for excellent growing conditions. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec were the first grape varieties to be planted by De Toren, and formed the basis of the first wine, Fusion V, released in 1999. This Cabernet Sauvignon-predominant blend is made in a classic "left bank" Bordeaux style from vines cultivated in gravel-rich soils. The estate's second wine, Z, was released in 2004. This "right bank" style Bordeaux blend is named after the Zephyr breeze that provides a favorable cool, coastal climate in the vineyard block from which the grapes are sourced. Merlot is the dominant grape variety and thrives in the clay-heavy soils found on this site. While these two wines form the backbone of De Toren's portfolio, the estate also produces Book XVII (a Bordeaux blend) and The Black Lion (made from Shiraz). These premium wines are made from only the best vines that are selected using high-tech equipment including infrared aerial imaging.

The palate exhibits very structured tannin, perfect acidity and again, a very traditional, Bordeaux like austerity. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Tasted at “The Wine Society” with Warren Winiarski. At the Cask 23 vertical this was one of the highlights: very “Pauillac” on the nose: cedar, charcoal and tobacco. It has brilliant definition and vigor for such a mature wine. The palate exhibits very structured tannin, perfect acidity and again, a very traditional, Bordeaux like austerity. Blackberry, tobacco and decayed leaves. Very stylish with some sweet cherry and orange peel on the finish. Just has a swaggering, confidence about it, accompanied by a natural feel. One of the greatest Napa Cabernets I have tasted.
